Gift Review: Historic Newspapers Personalised Book

My dad absolutely loves reading the newspaper. Growing up I remember our coffee table being filled with at least 10 of the latest weeks newspapers. Some containing general news and a lot of French newspapers, mainly sports ones, covering things like football and of course my dad’s favourite cycling. He would thoroughly read each one from cover to cover, and still does now! So, when our next review was requested, I couldn’t say no, and it had the perfect timing of my dad’s birthday.

Historic Newspapers, is a personalised gift, that contains newspaper covers that were printed on the specific date you might want to celebrate. Whether that be a birthday, wedding, or another significant event you might want to remember. Personalised gifts are such a crowd-pleaser, regardless of whether its your cup of tea or not, there’s always something special when receiving a gift with your name on it.

What we thought of the book

The timing of the arrival of the book was perfect. I was able to unveil this in true style for my dad’s birthday. When he opened the book, he first read the personalised message and was really impressed it had been made just for him, but in true dad style hadn’t noticed that his birthday and name had been printed on the front of the book. Turing the pages he was keen to see all the front covers and curious to read each of the headlines.

I then pointed out that the front covers all matched the day of his birthday, he was so moved by this and had a huge smile, and decided to go back through the book, realising that the first front cover was the day he was born and the rest followed suit and covered each year beyond that to the current date.

The book is visually appealing, and extremely well made. Each page has been carefully printed and is the size and format of a the original Daily Mirror newspaper on which the book has been based, and has a beautiful hard back embossed cover. An interesting fact about the Daily Mirror is that it was Britain’s best selling newspaper post-war and up to the 1970s, and was first established in 1903.

What dad liked about the book, was looking back at tabloid headlines from when he was a teen, seeing if he could remember them and whether any had been significant at the time. He really enjoyed looking back at old news and reading all the snippets. We sat together looking at, and noted how it seems that Ascot is always around the time of his birthday!

Just to point out that this book had all of the Daily Mirror tabloid headlines, but you can also find a similar book that contains the Daily Telegraph headlines. I think this is nice to be able to choose from two completely different newspapers, and I imagine, it would be interesting to see the comparisons in the headlines. I wonder which angle they took on a story, or whether they featured contrasting events!

You can also find books dedicated to football headlines, which I thought was a great idea and would be a great ‘unbirthday’ gift. Perfect for if you wanted to remember the Euro’s for example. You could get one with the date of this years Euros and have all the football snippets from the past until that point. I love how creative you could be with some of the personalisation. So, it doesn’t just have to be about a special birthday it can be about a moment too!

This is such a great gift for nostalgia purposes. I used to love reading magazines as a kid like Smash Hits, I would love to get my hands on some old copies of that.
