Wigs can be a cool accessory to own and there are many reasons why someone would resort to use it. It can be from making a fashion statement ie to rock a different look and hair colour without having to dye your hair to having a bad hair day.  Sometime people resort to using a wig due to suffering from hair loss due to old age or illness such as alopecia, genetics or cancer. Whatever your reasons may be we share some great tips about how to care for your wig and the types of wigs which are available.

How do you pick the perfect wig for you?

First, try to decide if you would prefer a synthtic wig or human hair wig, it all depends on your budget, the texture of the hair and how it feels on your face.  Synthetic wigs are great if you want a temporary option and want to keep the wig relatively short.  Human hair wigs are recommended if you would like to style it into ponytails and to keep it for a prolonged period of time due to their cost and maintenance.

Human hair vs Synthetic Hair

Human wigs look more real and have a bounce to it. It can be easily washed, heat-styled and generall last a lot longer than synthtic hair but costs a lot more. Although synthetic hair can cost a lot less, they do require a lot more maintenance. If you would like to cut your wig, always do it when you are wearing it, so that it will fit your face shape. Human hair are generally easier to cut compared to synthetic which requires special shears

Wig Care Tips

Do wash your wig often to keep it hygenic, it is recommended that you wash it after about 8 to 12 washes.

Human Hair

Before washing it, make sure you brush the wig using a wig brush. For wigs with a tight curl, do not brush, use fingers and gently remove tangles. Using a mild shampoo, turn wig inside out and immerse in cold water, gently swirl and let soak for approximately 5 minutes. Rinse until all the shampoo is removed. Do also apply conditioner and leave 2 minutes then wash it out, gently pat dry and air dry the hair on a wig stand.

Synthetic Hair

Before washing it, make sure you brush the wig using a wig brush. For wigs with a tight curl, do not brush, use fingers and gently remove tangles. Using a wig shampoo specially formulated for synthetic wigs.  Turn wig inside out and immerse in cold water, gently swirl and let soak for approximately 5 minutes. Rinse until all the shampoo is removed. Do also apply wig conditioner and leave 2 minutes then wash it out, gently pat dry, spray a revitalizing conditioner to condition the wig fibers and air dry the hair on a wig stand. Avoid using heat appliances to prevent fibre damage.
