Its almost mid April now and we love it at this time of the year. With fresh flowers popping up around us and the sun finally coming out …it certainly feels like the cold and wintery months are behind us. To make the best out of this year’s spring and summer time, we share some fun filled ideas which you can do to get your kids to spend more time in the Garden.
Outdoor fun with the Kids
As parents, we find that our kids love to spend hours and hours in the garden, they are just happy to be playing around or helping us plant flowers, fruits and vegetables. We try our best to encourage them to be out and about getting dirty instead of being stuck in the house watching TV or playing with the tablet. So at the start of each Spring, the whole family heads to the garage and sifts through all the toys from last season (which we have previously packed away in a box), dusting them and make a list of what we need to order for this year which includes items such as outdoor crayons, slides if our old one has been broken, balls, inflatable pool, water guns etc. Updating our outdoor garden patio furniture and toys is something we do yearly, both our kids would help us look through websites for cheap and discounted toys to check out they would like to order and we make a decision together depending on our budget. Next, we bring out and set-up the existing items from last season for them to have a play (while we wait for new ones to arrive) as we know this gets them out and about being active and getting that much needed Vitamin D which most of us lack living in the UK.
Kids and Gardening
They say things happen when you get older and one of the things we have realised as we age is that we love our garden and we take pride in spending so much time outside when the weather permits it. In the last few years, we have planted various plants such as flowers, herbs, fruit tress as well as vegetables. We often head to our local nursery as a family to get the latest seasonal plants to update our garden. Last year, we planted late summer roses and daffodil bulbs which has blossomed beautifully this year. As parents we make a point to bring our kids to the nursery, so they get a say on what they want to plant this season. We also get them little garden kits so they are out with us digging holes, looking for worms and planting vegetables such as peppers, potatoes, raddish as well as sweet peas. Not only do we want to eat more organic vegetables but we find such great joy when we see our fruits of labour. We also find that when we encourage our kids to grow vegetables, they will make an effort to try tasting it. Last year, we got our son to eat baby potatoes for the first time after he helped us grow potatoes. This year we want to get him to try sweet peas and beetroot, so he’s planted these.
Fun Kids Garden Decorations
We find that we tend to make our garden interesting and beautiful for the kids but adding little gnomes in the corner, butterflies on the walls or colourful cheap outdoor garden decorations. One of the things they have been facinated with recently are Solar Stake Lights and these are so fun and keeps our outdoor light costs low as its solar powered. It is also great when we are having BBQ with friends over and the kids are running about and we want to create some sort of border or path way. Getting a set of 6 or 12 is perfect, some people tend to place them in a row while others on both sides of the patio walk.
Outdoor Patio and Garden Furniture for Kids
Lastly we can’t stress how much our kids love tents or any sort of play house or sofas for them to sit and have a play especially when its too hot to be out under the direct sun. If your garden has the space for it, we would totally recomment a large enough tent for the whole family and so you could set it up with picnics, music and have a party outdoor. We find, this is a great way for family to huddle up together and spend quality time chit chatting. Our garden is slightly smaller hence we tend to have little kids style play tents for them to sit in and bring their toys into. They find this so comforting and fun at the same time. We find spending a lot of time in the garden enjoying nature very rewarding. Our kids also learn so much through play and by using their imagination. So make the best of your garden, not matter the size or design of it. Think about how you can update your garden with either furnitures or decorative items to make it more fun for yourself and your family. There are lots of great garden and patio furniture deals out there at the moment and we would totally recommend you finding out which one works best for you. Lastly enjoy the sun and remember to wear your hat and sun protection if you are out and about. As they say….bring on summer time!
