Not only are we big foodies but we love our spicy food as well. On most days we find ourselves adding spicy chilli sauce to our meals such as when we eat our pizzas or fish and chips, hence we were totally happy to be contacted by the team at East Coast Chilli Co to review a box of these wonderful and cute bottles of chillis sauces. The box is perfect packaged and looks like a fabulous gift to be given to anyone who loves a bit of spice in their lives. The six bottles came with a couple of recipe cards with ideas on how these chilli sauces can be added to dishes. Some of the recipes included were Extra Hot Chicken Wings, Extra Hot Chicken and Potato Cuirry with Mangoes, Hot & Spicy Beef Casserole, Spicy Stuffed Marrows, Winter Warmer Soup, Spicy and Smoky Spaghetti Balognaise, Devilled Eggs and Chancey Chicken Kebabs. Each bottle was just short of 5″ tall (60ml) and clearly marked with the name, ingredients, nutrition values and suggestions on how it can be used. There is a spice level indicated in the front of the bottle with Level 1 being less spicy to Level 5 being Very Hot and Spicy. These sauces tastes great on their own as a dipping sauce but we found that they taste even better when cooked with and added into a dish. Read on to read our reviews and how we used each of the chilli sauces.
Extra Hot Harbanero and Naga Chilli Sauce (Level 5)
If you love spicy food and often find yourself pushing the limits trying to eat something with more heat each time, then this would be the sauce for you. Although we should be stating that this sauce is very very hot so try it with precaution…. it does taste yummy but does not totally burn your taste buds.
This extra hot sauce is recommended to be used on pizzas, beans on toast, ham sandwiches or in curries. We decided to add this to our chicken, potato and mango curry and it tasted amazing! Even our 7+ and 5 year old kids ate the curry with rice and vegeables and my daughter said she loved the flavours. We used the Extra Hot Chicken and Potato Curry Recipe provided by East Coast Chilli Co in the Recipe Idea Card (exact recipe measurements below) but adapted it to our taste.
2 chicken breasts
4 medium potatoes
1 large onion chopped
4 cloves of garlic chopped
1 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
1 chicken stock cube
4 tbsp East Coast Chilli Company Extra Hot Naga and Habanero Sauce
4 tbsp East Coast Chilli Company Mango Chilli Sauce (Passion)
1tsp ground turmeric
We boiled the cut potatoes in a separate pot for 10 minutes then kept it aside. Next, we added little oil into the pan, fried the garlic and onions and a slice of ginger then added the cut chicken with the turmeric on it and gave it a stir, next we added 1 tsp of the east coast chilli company naga and habanero sauce, then added the water and tomato passata (we did not have chopped tomatoes and this worked as well). We also did not have the mango chilli sauce so instead, we added in some sliced fresh mangoes into the curry. After tasting the curry, we decided to add in a little coconut milk to give the curry a less spicy flavour and then added the potatoes in and finally garnished with the corainder leaves. We ate this with rice and stir fried vegetables.
Harbanero and Lime (Level 4)
This is a hot sauce with habanero chillies, fresh lime and tomatoes. If you are having one of those lazy days and just want to wake your senses up, then this is the sauce for you. Having a quick taste of it, we immediate get a spicy kick from the sauce and the beautiful lime flavours just greets us. We decided to marinate the chicken using this sauce and bake it in the oven (this would have been perfect on the BBQ as well). We just added a little tomato paste, some paprika and a little honey to mellow the spice and give the chicken a darker colour as the colour of the sauce was quite light. This tasted really nice and we are going to try to marinate our fish with this the next time and bake it in the oven…do remember to use the chilli sauce sparingly as your lips might be left feeling a little tingly afterwards.
Chipotle Chilli Ketchup (Level 3)
This is a medium spicy smoky tomato ketchup sauce which is recommended to be added to BBQs, burgers, hot dogs, ribs etc. Now what can we say? This is our FAVOURITE chilli sauce of the lot, we totally loved this! The chilli spice comes through, but the smokiness and the sweetness of the tomatoes just makes the sauce that much more delectable. We have added this sauce to almost all of our dishes, mainly our marinades, our pasta ragu sauce for a spicy twist. We also added this into our chilli-con-carne as well as our lasagne and we totally loved it. It just gives the dish a lift and tiny bit of heat which makes it extra special.
Carolina Reaper & Honey (Level 4)
This is a hot sauce made with Carolina Reaper chillies, honey, soy sauce and garlic. There is a familiar oriental flavour than comes from this chilli sauce. There is sweetness to it, yet a very strong hot spicy chilli flavour that jumps straight at you. This chilli sauce is perfect to be added into marinades for BBQs or even into stir fries.
We decided to test the sauce by adding this into our chicken and vegetables stir fry. The chilli sauce gave the dish the needed heat while still keeping the flavours quite oriental. It tasted really nice and the best part about it is that we could just add a drop of the sauce, then dish out the dish for our kids then add a few drops to the balance of the dish to more to make it spicier for the adults. This was another favourite dish with our family. We added lots of vegetables such as ginger, onions, baby corn, red pepper, beans and spring onions amongst others and the dish was a stunner and we are definitely making this again.
Garlic and Harbanero (Level 3)
This is a medium hot tomato-based sauce with garlic and habenero chillies. We love the subtle garlicky spicy flavour of the sauce, its recommended you eat this with cheese or try adding it to any recipe that calls for the addition of tomatoes and garlic. We loved this sauce…its one of our favourite, as we just dipped it in cheese and biscuits and ate it. We even tried it with plain noodle soup to give it an extra spicy lift to it. Here’s a photo of our quick brunch which was cheesy bagel with a few drops of the garlic and habanero sauce. You could easily add more to it to make it spicier but this was perfect for us.
The sauces came in super cute tiny bottles and we loved trying them out and cooking the different dishes that we did. We found that we could control the spiciness of the dish by adding more or less of the sauce. We loved the flavours of each of the sauces and the the heat it gave as well. The spice level on each of the bottles are indicated correctly and we thik its a great present to give someone else or for yourself. You also don’t need to use too much of them so they can last you for a while…. quite reasonable for the price . There are lots of recipes to try out on their website which we went through to get ideas from. We only wished it was easier to search through the recipes, as we found we had to search it via the dish but we would have preferred to also have an option to find the recipes via the type of chilli sauce. For example when we wanted to find a recipe using the extra hot habanero and naga chilli sauce, we had to go through each dish to see which recipe used this particular chilli sauce so that was a little time consuming. Otherwise it was totally fun experimenting and trying out new flavours and dishes. We would definitely recomment these sauces to our readers.
Things to take note:
- The chilli sauces are made using real chillis and natural ingredients and not extracts
- Out of ideas on what to cook with the chilli sauces ? Don’t worry…you will be send a couple of recipe cards when you purchase the chilli bottles, alternatively you can head to their website to check out the recipes created by Tim, the owner. These are all tried and tested recipes for starters such as salad dressings, main courses such as curries and marinades and even chilli influenced puddings (yes you read it right…sweet but spicy desserts)
- Remember to taste a tiny bit of it first to see how spicy it is for you and if the sauce is Level 4 or 5 we would advice you to start off with half teaspoon and then increasing it depending on how well you can handle your heat.
- Shake bottle well before use and remember to refrigerate it after you open it
- The Habanero and Lime Sauce won a gold star last year and this year, The Extra Hot Habanero & Naga Chilli Sauce won a gold star

About East Coast Chilli Co.
East Coast Chilli Company is owned by Tim Chapman and assisted by his partner, Leanne Evans. They met through work and then decided to start up this company selling chilli sauces. Tim started experimenting with the recipes and the first two sauces he made were pretty basic efforts and soon found himself making better and better chilli sauces. The chilli sauces they offer today range from mild to extra hot using nothing but natural ingredients and not extracts. The sauces are made for the taste rather than just the heat. They only use locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, using onions, garlic and whatever chillies they can grow themselves. The aim is to be able to do this on a scale to make them self-sufficient in these ingredients. All the sauces are made by Tim in his kitchen at home, usually listening to Slayer, and although Leanne decided to take the offer of turning the secondment into a permanent position you can find them both in their gazebo at country fairs and farmers’ markets throughout East Anglia.
