Getting engaged and putting on a ring on your finger or your partner’s can be one of the most memorable experience of your life. The engagement ring is a symbol of your love and commitment to the relationship hence picking the right ring is so important. Engagement rings come in all sort of shapes and colours now from the traditional single diamond engagement rings, the three stone rings to even cluster engagement rings. Some modern couples are even opting for just an engagement band or one with a ruby or sapphire stone on it instead of a diamond for something different. Our article on what you need to know before you pick the right engagement ring is so informative for anyone who is planning to buy an engagement ring. So read on for some fine tips.

Family Jewels

First of all, speak to your parents / grandparents about your partner and tell them that you are planning to propose. Find out if they have any family jewels which you can use to propose.  You never know as they may have a priceless family heirloom which has been used by your ancestors to pass on to you and the special person in your life.

Cost / Budget

If you don’t have any family jewels, then be realistic and look at how much you have money to spend, an engagement ring can cost anywhere from £100 for a simple make to £10,000 for a more exquisite ring.  Visit shops or engagement ring websites to look out for discounts or sales. By looking at the choices available in the market and your budget, you would know how much to spend or need to save for. Most importantly stick to your budget once you set it.

Precious Metal / Gemstone

Next consider the ring style, the type of precious metal and if you want a diamond or gemstone on the ring. If its a surprise proposal, discreetly ask your parner or a friend to find out about the ring size and preference.  I personally love gold bands, but current trend also include more modern precious metals such as rose gold, white gold, platinum or titanium. As yourself if you want to get a diamond or gemstone on the ring. If you are getting diamond, remember your 4 C’s when choosing your stone which is cut, colour, clarity and carat.

Ring Ideas / Design

Look out for ideas on the internet on your preferred design / pattern so you know if you would like a classic pattern or conventional styles. You can now even find that ordering a customade ring is so easy online as in the the shop.  Some of the current designs include twisted rings or jewelled bands amongst others.

Make sure your ring comes with all the necessary certification / guarantee to prove its authenticity. If you are purchasing a diamond ring, make sure the shop has obtained the diamond from legitimate sources and the diamonds are conflict-free.

These are just some tips on what you need to know before picking the right engagement ring. Hope it post has helped you.

I think it’s so important to have a bit of an idea of what you want before going but also trying on lots of designs as so many things look different when you try them on. I worked in a jewellers for about 8 years so helped a lot of people choose rings x

There’s a lot to picking out an engagement ring. It’s the ring a woman is going to treasure for life, the process is detailed and not as simple as just seeing one and saying – yeah that’s the one

My fiancee chose my ring and it was beautiful, only problem is that rings make me feel super claustrophobic so we just ended up selling it and going on holiday. Haha! Good job he isn’t sensitive!
