Help! I’ve Lost My Llama Children’s Book Review and Competition *

Help! I've Lost My Llama front cover image
We always love getting asked to review books! We have lots of books in the kids collection however, we always read the same favourites, so its refreshing when we get a new one to enjoy. This book came to us via someone you may already recognise, yes it is our very own reviewer Colette Warbrook. As you might already know Colette, is a freelance journalist and copywriter, who has worked at regional and local newspapers throughout the UK. She also writes fiction, in particular children’s stories. Help! I’ve Lost My Llama is Colette’s first book, and it features illustrations by Mark Wilcox (known as Wilf).   Writing a book like this is something a lot of us dream of but just never get around to doing, and plus, how often can you come up with a story that works. Well if you read our review you will see what we thought of this little book. And if you like the sound of it please enter our competition, follow the details below to know more.

Here’s a review questionnaire from an unfiltered view of a 7 year old…

What did you like about the book?
Enzo: I liked it because the Llama could drive a tractor and went to the beach

What was the best bit?
The best bit was when he went to the beach because that was funny

What didn’t you like about the book?
The pictures of the Llama weren’t good because it always had its eyes closed and didn’t look like the picture on the front of the book, and the boy always had his eyes open.

How did the book make you feel?
The story made me happy

Would you read the book again?
Yes I would read the book again.

What I thought about the book – The adult review!

Before even reading the book, I actually loved the illustrations by Mark Wilcox, although I think I would have liked a brighter colour pallet – but this is just personal preference (Love Todd Parr books for this reason). But I don’t feel it overly effects the final outcome of how beautifully drawn the story is. Hearing what Enzo had to say was interesting as I hadn’t really noticed the Llama, and how he wasn’t the same as on the front cover. The looseness of the illustrations and watercolour finish really works well. I think so often people write children’s books with not enough focus on the illustrations, which in my option is as important as the writing, however, I really feel they got the balance right, even if Enzo doesn’t quite agree!

The story is really good – it is funny and completely daft which appeals to all kids and big kids!! It would be great to hear more about Lottie’s future adventures, on her owner Tim’s red toy tractor. She seems like she likes to get up to mischief. So I can see how this book could end up being a series of books. Collette Warbrook, has a lovely writing style and the book is easy to read which was great for my 7 year, but is also fun for adults to read to younger children too. It was a great addition to our bed time reading and I think we will end up reading it tonight again and probably tomorrow knowing my three!!  I would say this is perfect to read to children from 0-8 years, and for 6-8 year olds to read on their own. My 9 year old found it a bit simple, but did still enjoy it.
