Very Lazy Ingredient Review

[Ad-gifted] We were sent a selection of the Very Lazy brand products to try such as Very Lazy Chilli Paste, Ginger Paste, Lemon Grass Paste as well as their smoked Chopped Garlic and Chopped Ginger to review and cook with.   As bloggers who love all things food, we tried various recipes using these ingredients, some of the recipes include a yummy Chicken Curry, Curry Potato dish and a Cocktail.  These ingredients are also perfect as a marinade of meat and seafood for when you have BBQs in your garden during summertime.

Hope you enjoy reading this post and learning about their products….especially and if you love cooking but would like some help to shorten the cooking process.

What did I think of the Very Lazy Ingredients?

I only ever used a pre-chopped ginger once before as I tend to always just buy fresh as its not something I add to my dishes that often. I was eager to try out these products though as they could keep well in the fridge for at least 6 weeks once opened, which is much longer than other brands which I have purchased before. Also, they had a good variety of different flavours to try.  The Very Lazy company believes that their range of pre-chopped garlic, ginger, lemongrass and chilli take some of the stress out of cooking.

They are made to cut down the prep time of peeling an chopping these much-used ingredients in our recipes.  Out of the products we were sent I chose to use the chopped ginger, chopped garlic, ginger paste, garlic paste and chilli paste, unfortunately, my household doesn’t like lemongrass so this was a no-go for us, however, if you do I would recommend trying the Very Lazy recipe for Lemon Grass Mojitos which you can find on their website.  I started by making a chicken curry, some spiced potatoes and naan bread, see the ingredients list below.

Chicken Curry Recipe

500g of boneless chicken breast or thigh meat chopped into chunks
Half a marrow chopped into chunks or whatever other vegetable you would like to put in (you could use cauliflower or spinach etc)
1 large finely chopped onion
4  tsp of very lazy chopped garlic
2 tsp of very lazy chopped ginger
1 tsp of very lazy ginger paste
1 heaped tsp of cumin
1 heaped tsp of turmeric
1 heaped tsp of garam masala
1 tsp of garlic powder (I added this as I didn’t find the chopped ginger to be that strong)
1/2 tsp of very lazy chilli paste (I did taste this and its not too strong – however, cooking it does intensify the heat)
3 tbsp of tomato puree concentrate
1 cup of water
salt and pepper to taste
Method
In a wok pan or similar cook the onion until soft, add in the chicken and cook until browned evenly. Then add in the chopped marrow and cook, add in all the spices and Very Lazy chopped garlic and ginger and ginger paste once this has all coated the ingredients in the pan. Then add the tomato puree and water and simmer until the chicken is cooked through. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Curry Potatoes Recipe

5 potatoes peeled and chopped into cubes
1 chicken or veg stock cube
2 tsp of chopped very lazy ginger
1 tsp of chopped very lazy garlic
1 tsp of turmeric
1 tsp of garam masala
1 tsp of oil
Method
Boil the potatoes in the stock cube – take them out when they are just slightly underdone. Add them to a pan (or to a ceramic electric griddle) with the Very Lazy ingredients, and the spices and oil.  Lightly fry them and set aside – you can reheat them when the curry and naan breads are ready.
Naan breads – these are great but I suggest following the recipe below, and if you do they work spot on! YUM.
For the naan bread – follow the Great British Bake off Naan Bread Recipe – you won’t believe how well these work.

What we thought

My family absolutely loved the curry saying it tasted like a ‘proper’ one!! So this was good. I actually found that you really could taste the vinegar and although we all thought it tasted great, I would like to try this again without the lazy ingredients to see if the vinegar is actually what made it taste more like a curry from a restaurant, as I suppose it gave it a bit more of a sour edge. The potatoes had a nice flavour but weren’t as popular, you don’t cook off the vinegar taste quite as much, so the sour edge isn’t quite as nice. You can taste the garlic and ginger though which is a good thing.

My next recipe was inspired from the recipes on their website, where they have cocktails – I am a sucker for cocktails and love experimenting at home.

Cocktail Recipe

200g of frozen strawberries
3 tsp of very lazy ginger paste
1 juice of a lemon
3 tbsp of colder caster sugar (other sugars are fine too)
1 shot of golden rum
topped with chilled sparkling water and a slice of lemon to garnish

Method

Heat the frozen strawberries for around 10-20 seconds in the microwave, mash them up with a fork and add the sugar, ginger paste, lemon juice – pour it into the bottom of a glass, add the rum and top with sparkling water – you can add more ice if you like however the frozen strawberries work well to cool it down.

What we thought

I quite liked it, it was a slightly less sweet option for a cocktail with the zing of the lemon and the fire of the ginger it was both warming and cool!! Quite nice for the summer – maybe you could spice it up for autumn and use pineapple ginger and cinnamon? My mother in law also tried it however, she did feel that the ginger left a slight aftertaste – maybe you can add more or less depending on how much you like ginger – she described it as tasting like a ginger biscuit in a drink form! ha – which is not too bad!

• The chopped ingredients all come pre-soaked in white wine vinegar
• All their products are GM free
• You can get Very Lazy products in most major supermarkets – however, go to their stock list page for more details
• The jars can be recycled
• They are a UK based company

Our Verdict

I am not sure if I would swap my fresh ingredients for the jarred and paste versions for cooking, however, I am tempted to look into their range further in terms of drinks – I felt this was a fun way to add a different flavour to a cocktail. They are clearly great for people who are stuck for time but still want to cook from fresh, so just because they aren’t for me, I would still suggest trying them out and seeing how they might fit into your cooking habits.

How much does it cost and where can I buy them?

The price of each item varies from £1 – £5 depending on the product. These products are easily available at Tesco, Asda or Waitrose to get a fair idea on price, alternatively, you can also purchase them in bulk on the internet.

About Very Lazy

Very Lazy believes that home cooking should be an adventure – an exciting, full flavoured exploration of the wonderful variety of foods from all over the world.  However, they know that preparing great ingredients can involve doing stuff that is messy and time-consuming. Not much fun at all. There had to be a better way – and that’s the thinking behind Very Lazy. Very Lazy peels, chops, slices and dices the very best ingredients, then capture them in all their tasty glory – in handy jars or tubes. They take away the hard work, so you can enjoy all the fun and rewards of being a great home cook.

The brand name sound so cute -“Very Lazy” which is suitable for me when talk about cooking. I like everything ready made and I would be very happy if the garlic is already chopped for me in the bottle.

That sounds amazing! I love garlic and onions, but I rarely use either one outside of that powdered stuff. That’s mainly due to the pain in the butt it is to dice up garlic or the pain in the eyes to chop onions. I need this Very Lazy in my life.
