Review: Nuud Vegan and Cruelty-Free Deodorant*

We went Nuud for this Review! What on Earth is Nuud you may ask.  Well it’s actually a new brand of deodorant. Not just any deodorant I might add, but one that claims to be vegan, cruelty-free, only contains 10 natural ingredients and its packaging is biodegradable. On this basis, I had to review it to see how well it faired in comparison to regular deodorants available. This was when I went on their website, and made my special order to receive the teeny tiny tube (yes its a tube-like a little tube of toothpaste) of what appears to be making huge waves in the deodorant market at the moment.

Nuud, pronounced nude – or if you ask the company, which I did – they really don’t care how you pronounce it, which I love about Nuud, they really try at all costs as a brand that is as inclusive as possible. Not only are they inclusive in how you might like to pronounce the brand name but also in who uses their deodorant. Some of you may recognise them, as recently they have been featured across many social media platforms, with their eye-catching videos of people applying the deodorant. We’ve seen hairy armpits, stubbly armpits and cleanly shaven armpits donning their creamy lotion.

Its cleverly patented formula, says that it prevents odour by neutralising bacteria with micro silver, and you only need to make one application in 3-7 days even when you are being active or have a shower/wash as this supposedly has no effect on how effective it is. It also interestingly has a  bioplastic sugarcane tube and comes in a biodegradable box. Its free from aluminium, and also has no fragrance.   As an alternative, Your Nature do a great vegan antiperspirant, probably the most eco-friendly in UK.

What I thought of Nuud 

In order to properly review this product, a tried it for a good couple weeks. I wanted to really make sure my body had adapted to the change in the type of deodorant I was using. And as recommended by the Brand they say that actually you may initially have to adapt to using their product. I actually already use aluminium free deodorant so I am not sure whether this allowed me to transition quite quickly.

I used a small amount and applied it to my freshly washed armpits, for the first couple of days I applied it each day, but once I can the idea that you can leave a gap in-between I did. And like I read on their website, it doesn’t stop you from sweating – which I actually seem to do more freely than when i wore Nuud. But the noticeable thing was that despite the sweating I didn’t smell!

After a few days gap, I then applied it again. As I got the hang of it I risked leaving bigger gaps and managed to leave it for the most (for me) for 4 days without reapplying. I shower daily so even with the use of soap on my skin it didn’t affect how well it worked – surprisingly! However, the only thing that bothered me was the smell. Although it has no fragrance, the mix of natural products smells strange, I bit like an old hand cream (if this makes sense). So although my armpits didn’t smell of body odour, I could smell this non-smell!

Will I continue to use Nuud? 

This is an interesting question – in the blog scheme of things I really can’t complain about the product and it really does work. It also has great features, with it being so tiny and comes in a biodegradable box. However, note that the bioplastic sugarcane tube works in the same way as plastic and will not biodegrade and should be recycled as if put into the environment will pollute it with microplastics as it breaks-down.

My big issue with Nuud is the cost. I currently buy an aluminium and salt-free deodorant that costs 99p, an own brand from a well-known supermarket. It works well and although I need to apply it daily it still lasts around two months – which means it cost around 12 pence per week. In comparison, Nuud is supposed to last around six weeks, which would equate to it costing £2 per week. This is a lot more than I (as a mother of three and a husband to account for) can justify spending on a deodorant even when it does tick a lot of ethical boxes.

Tips when deciding to use Nuud

• They actually recommend you not to use it everyday as it will last a good couple of days maybe more before needing to be reapplied, which confused me, to begin with, but once you get the hang of the fact it does protect you even though you’re not putting it on daily.
• You only need a pea-sized amount under each armpit according to their suggestion when I asked on their Facebook page. However, I actually found half a pea to be sufficient, but you make want to test out varying amounts before sticking with what suits you best.
• When starting out with Nuud make sure that you are wearing it with clean clothes – it will prevent you from smelling but won’t prevent the smell of already dirty clothes that maybe holding your sweat from a previous day!

For my own curiosity, I had a good look at what most of the ingredients were. Just to see how natural they were and how safe they are to use on our skin. I found that the ingredients contained in Nuud deodorant, are as stated natural – or should I say naturally deriving. Such as Polyglyceryl-3 disosteratem, which has to be carefully extracted from a vegetable product, in order to make it into an emulsifier.
