We have been asked to review the 55th Anniversary Edition of the book, which has been compiled by some of its most iconic cast members. There aren’t many of us growing up that haven’t watched this two-hour-long musical masterpiece and sung the songs with friends and family over and over. My children haven’t watched, quite as many times as me but they certainly know the songs just as well as I do! We love singing Do-Re-Mi and My Favorite Things, and they have done even from being tiny. So this book couldn’t be more perfect for us as a family to enjoy and treasure. The story of The Sound of Music is so well told within the musical and features such a prominent time in History. The Von Trapp family really did exist, and their story took place at the very start of WWII in Salzburg Austria. The film manages to flow the family turmoil, and through the difficulties, they also face with the introduction of the war. But through this dark time, we a deeply connected to the Von Trapp family and Maria, and the love they have, through the lightness created within all the songs they sing. As a family, we are so connected with them that we have even visited Salzburg and have run through the Churchyard as Maria did in the film! It is such a fabulous place with views of the City and the Mountains, and holds such History not only within the film but also within the History of Austria and their introduction into WWII.

Reviewing this book has been such a pleasure. I have previously read about the actors that play the characters in the film, through my own curiosity and love of all things to do with the movies, but never with such personal feeling. Within the book are photographs from the set, and personal pictures, from the actors. The input of the actors who played all seven of the Von Trapp children has been integral in the creation of this book and makes it all the more special. One of those super special sections includes little notes that the actress playing Brigitta wrote to her father while she was away from him doing filming, and of the lives, they had beyond the film. I really love becoming more connected with the characters I already feel so much a part of.

This book is a real treat for any fan of The Sound of Music and would surely be a great gift, or purchase. Or even someone who is interested in the history behind the film. Being able to own this book is so iconic, even at 55 years old it still feels like such a fresh story. The film has not only been part of my childhood, but also a part of my children’s lives too. They just love it and have shown a real interest in the book too. Beyond the snippets of memories, there is also the history of the real Von Trapp Family and equally, for all the lovers of the songs, there are lyrics from the film. You learn about how the actors were home school on the Austrian mountain tops, and how this film set to change their lives and careers forevermore.
