Travelodge Glasgow Govan, Scotland

[Ad-gifted] Bank Holiday weekends are a great time for families to head out for short day breaks and stayovers.  We decided to head over to Glasgow in Scotland during the last bank holiday weekend to visit family and sightsee at the same time. We were lucky to be contacted by the team at the right moment from Travelodge to review one their newest hotels, the Glasgow Govan Travelodge.  Since it was our first time to Glasgow, we wanted to stay in a hotel which had easy access to town, the local attractions as well as the highway as we were visiting family members who lived in Kilmacolm and Stirlingshire.

Our check-in time at the Travelodge Glasgow Govan was for 3pm, so when we arrived in Glasgow, we decided to head off to Glasgow Science Centre to have an early lunch and to tour the place. It is an amazing place to head to for the whole family and educational too as you can easily spend a day there participating  in the various activities.  When Glasgow Science Centre closed at 5pm, it was the perfect time for us to head to our travelodge hotel to get ourselves refreshed and checked in.

We were booked into a family room, which consisted of a king sized bed and 2 single beds for the kids on the side. The room was spacious and had everything we needed, power sockets/usb points to charge our gadgets, a lovely bathroom to freshen up, a table for the kids to do their activity and TV. There were extra pillows provided with hangers for us to hang our coats.  The hotel to our surprise is very conveniently located just walking distance away from Lidl shopping mall, the local train station and some eateries.

Next, we decided to head to Soar intu Breahead which was just 10 minutes drive away for a quick shop and dinner. On the way back we also spotted a Sainsbury, we quickly stopped off to stock up on our snack and water supply for the next day before heading back to our hotel to rest for the night.  Although intu mall closes at 6pm, there is still plenty of child-friendly activities to do there in the evening such as watching cinema, Climb Zone, going snowboarding at the Snow Factor, Trampoline Park, Laser Station amongst others. There are also lots of family-friendly eateries there such as Pizza Express, Nandos, TGI Fridays, Five Guys or the China Buffet King which serves all you can eat buffet for a fixed price on the first floor. We soon headed back to our hotel room to rest for the night.

The next day we woke up nice and early after a lovely night’s rest. The beds were comfy to sleep on, our King size Dreamer bed has been designed exclusively by Sleepeezee and it includes over 950 individual pocketed springs and has extra comfort layer, hypo-allergenic fillings.  We pre-booked our breakfast with Travelodge and headed to the Bar Cafe at 8am as we had another busy day ahead.

There were plenty of choices when it came to our unlimited breakfast from cereal, yoghurt, toasted bread, granola, fruit salad, croissant as well as freshly cooked bacon, tomatoes, sausages, eggs and beans.  For drinks we had a selection of juice available from the juice station, milk for the kids, hot chocolate and freshly ground whole bean Lavazza coffee as well.

Staff were very friendly at the hotel and came up to ask if we wanted our croissant warmed up which was great. If you ask me, it is totally worth it to include breakfast into your stay for just £8.75 per adult and the best part? For every adult enjoying their unlimited breakfast, up to 2 children aged 15 and under can eat for FREE! (which trust me …that’s what you want to hear if you are a parent).

With our full belly, we were ready to head into Glasgow town again, with so much to see and do, the choices were unlimited. There was a T-Rex exhibition on at Kelvin Hall, there was also the Riverside Museum & Tall Shop to visit but we decided to head to Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum which was just 10 minutes car drive away from our hotel.

We found a parking space close by the museum (you have to to pay for parking depending on where you park) and walked up, we were told they are limited parking spaces at the Museum. We were all very excited as we were going to see Dippy the Dinosaur which was co-incidentally on tour that very weekend. We were really lucky to catch the tour as Dippy left the next day to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Did you know that Kelvingrove Museum opened its doors in 1901? After all these years, it is still a great place to head to for a family day out as firstly, the museum is free (donations are kindly accepted), secondly, there are about 22 galleries consisting from art pieces, relics, stuffed animals, and collections from Ancient Egypt to Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Depending on when you head to the gallery, there are also temporary/touring exhibitions and displays. Our kids certainly enjoyed their day at the museum as we tried to teach them a little more about art and culture.

It is a child-friendly museum as there were lots of areas where kids could either listen to a story or have a quick play or read an interactive display. Our kids also had the opportunity to enjoy listening to the lovely organ recital which was played at 1pm. This was a crowd favourite for sure. You could easily spend the whole day at the museum as there was just so much to see and do there. We headed back to our hotel to refresh before we headed out for dinner. If you are too tired to drive out, Travelodge Glasgow Govan also offers a range of meals including freshly made authentic stone baked pizza, salads, burgers and desserts. For just £12.25, you can order a starter, main and dessert, they also have a value meal deal for kids as well.  There is also tea and coffee making facilities so it was convenient when we got back and wanted a quick drink before dinner.

What did we think of our stay at Travelodge Glasgow Govan?

The rooms were clean, spacious and comfy for a family room. There was a king sized bed in the middle of the room and 2 single beds for the kids on the side which was perfect. We had extra pillows and staff were happy to provide extra if we needed.  When we arrived, we plonked all our items on the desk, so we missed the ‘make my room sign’ – which we were supposed to hang on our door before 11am (the next day) to get our room cleaned.  So when we returned to our rooms the next day our beds was not made up but, luckily our room was not that messy so we did not mind. We still managed to get extra clean towels from reception.

I also forgot to bring my toothbrush when we arrived and unfortunately, the hotel reception did not have any spares but luckily Lidl was just 5-minute walk away so I managed to get one. Otherwise, our stay was really good, the rooms comfy and we all had a great night’s sleep. Having the breakfast included into our package was also a wise choice especially when you are travelling with kids and want one less thing to worry about.

Would we recommend staying at Travelodge Glasgow Govan? Yes of course, due to how clean it was, how spacious the family rooms were and how convenient it was to town. We would definitely be staying here again.

Here’s a short 5-minute youtube video of our stat at Travelodge Glasgow Govan, watch it to find out what both our kids thought about their stay

It looks like the whole family had a great time away and I am sure that was helped by the fantastic hotels. I love the fact that everything was so easy and pretty close by. I think Travelodge hotels are great value for money and they do a great job. I haven’t made it to Glasgow yet, but it is on my list of places to visit. Maybe a stay at this Travelodge is on the cards!
