Children’s Book Review: Parrots Don’t Live in the City! *

We were sent a lovely children’s book titled Parrots Don’t Live in the City by Doodles & Scribbles.  Written by Lucy Reynolds & Jenna Herman, the book is suitable for children aged 2 to 6 years of age and is about Jack and Emily who explore a world of hidden animals, birds and mini-beasts in search of one very special creature….a parrot. The book is beautifully illustrated and children can even can join a nature trail to look for little garden creatures in the book mimicking a hide and seek experience as they read the book.  The book also features hand-drawn illustrations, with washes of oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastel on mixed textured surfaces.

What we loved about the book?

Both our children who are aged 5 and 7 could easily read the book on their own, and they were not just reading the book but they kept stopping on each page and admiring the illustration.  They also were kept busy looking for the little creatures as they said they were on a mini-beast adventure trail.  I love how our kids are able to be imaginative as well as inquisitive as they read and explored each page.  Their favourite part was when the parrot burst out …they also said they enjoyed reading Parroty Fun as they got a chance to  learn more about the ring-necked parakeets and where they are from.  Another great thing about the book is that, its printed using certified FSC paper which means it is printed using eco-friendly paper.

As you can see there are not many words to the book but yet the book allows children to look at each image and let their imagination flow without restriction.  The book is very captivating and interractive and we found that our kids loved it. We know for certain it is now going to be one of their favourite bedtime reads for a long time.

Where can I purchase the book, Parrots Dont Live in the City?

The book is available from Waterstones as well as selected independent book stores.  Altrnatively, you can also purchased the book directly from the author’s website.

How much does the book cost?

It is priced at £7.99

About the Author

Doodles & Scribbles are made up of Lucy Reynolds and Jenna Herman, two long-time friends who met at university, where Lucy was studying poetry and Jenna was studying Fine Art.  Lucy’s always been a bookworm and loves scribbling stories; Jenna’s an artist to the core and has always doodled drawings. Their journey began two years ago, when Lucy shared her first set of children’s poems with Jenna, and they decided to collaborate.  The seed for the stories was planted when Lucy spotted a parrot in the trees in London. Her husband wouldn’t believe her, until one day she found a brilliant green feather hiding amongst the leaves…Now, two years and lots of scribbles, doodles and cups of tea later, they have a successful first title under their belts and more in the pipeline coming soon.
