[Ad-gifted] After nearly a year of waiting, we were thrilled to head back to The Regent Theatre to set sail with Stoke-on-Trent’s very own Jonny Wilkes and Welsh actor, Kai Owen for this year’s panto, The Pantomime Adventures of Peter Pan and what an swashbuckling adventure it was!

The show was sprinkled with lots of fairy dust complete with high-wire flying special effects, an impressive set and talented cast and crew who dazzled us with songs and dance as well as plenty of laughs all through the show.

This year, funny man Jonny Wilkes stars as Smee in his 18th Regent panto, and yet again, he does not fail to impress the audience with his energy, enthusiasm and his ability to get the crowd going with his Stokie themed jokes.

We wondered if the panto was going to be any less than spectacular with our favourite dame, Christian Patterson away filming with an Oscar award-winning director.  Although we missed him, we were totally not disappointed with the show, as both Jonny and Kai Owen (who plays Captain Hook) were able to still maintain the level of expectations, banter, slapstick jokes and kept the crowd and us laughing till our sides hurt.  My children could not wait for the Twelve Days of Christmas song and the antics that went with it…it was just epic!   It was also fabulous to see such chemistry between Jonny and Kai and we could watch their silly pranks and listen to their funny jokes all night long.

Amanda Coutts was such a star and truly turned into a ‘real’ life-sized Tinkerbell who confidently flew around the stage with the help of the high-wire and effortlessly glided in her roller skates from one end to the other, on stage.  Hannah Everest who plays Wendy Darling has the most amazing voice and sang so wonderfully with Amanda in many of the numbers.  Finally, Rory Sutherland who plays Peter Pan, has such an innocence to him and made his character believable.

What a fantastic show the cast and crew put on and what makes panto at the Regent special is the rapport that Jonny has with the crowd…from the moment he entered the stage, the crowd immediately shouts, “Ay up, me ducks!”  He also had the audience, of all ages and sizes, amazed and entertained from start to finish.   My kids totally look forward to getting sprayed by the water gun and jump up and down trying to catch the toilet paper.   The show was made even more magical with the help of the sound, lighting, costume and set design and to add, the crowd started the show on their feet, singing and dancing and ended also on their feet still dancing.  It finally feels like it is time for Christmas.

So book your tickets, if you want to get whisked off to Neverland for a magical adventure which the whole family would enjoy.
