All year round I am conscious of what I apply to my skin, I struggle with eczema flair-ups and have relatively dry skin, but many products that I buy often react with me in a negative way. So, when I got asked to review this next book, I was only happy to. Mud, Salt & Medicine is a book focused on well-being and the home creation of wellness products. If you are into crafts and creating but also love wellness and home remedies then read our latest review.
Firstly this is a beautiful hardback book and has been published by Welbeck Publishing, who have sent us numerous books over the years to review, all of which seem to have that same standard of impeccable quality. What’s more, the content of this book delivers too.
Not only is this book great for an on-the-shelf remedy book for the home, but would make a lovely gift for a close friend or relative that may like to experiment and create or just loves all things to do with well-being. Keep on reading to find out what I thought of the book.

What I thought of Mud, Salt + Medicine
Mud, Salt & Medicine gives you a variety of detailed explanations such as the history of therapeutic practices like thermal bathing, explaining how this is one of the earliest well-being practices there is and our deep connection to water and cleansing.
It then goes on to give you a range of recipes that you can make at home to use in the bath or to cleanse. The book then follows on with recipes for balms, cleanses and lotions, as well as natural ways to keep your bathroom, smelling fresh.

The final section of the book focuses on medicine, looking at herbs and ointments that can be used in basic first-aid. Each paragraph is laid out with detailed information on preventative medicine, immune response and how botanicals can be well placed in helping with basic first-aid.*
Finally, there are recipes to accompany the section such as compresses and poultices that can help with bites or allergic reactions.
When reading this book, you will not only be informed but also have a handy guide that would allow you to make your own home remedies. If you’re not familiar with essential oils at the back of the book, there is a guide to natural raw materials that contains a list of clays, salts, flowers, waters and essential oils.
Another important point to consider is the fact that the author, Julia Lawless has included a safety and measurements guide, which will ensure that you don’t use any of the essential oils in an overly concentrated way, which can at times be dangerous. It also includes general conversions and ways in which to blend your oils to make them safe to use.

This will become a well-used book in our home and although many of the recipes have a vast amount of ingredients that you might not always be able to get hold of, there are plenty within it that we can work on without the need of too much additional cost. However, if you choose to make some of the more complicated recipes you can find most of the ingredients available at places like Holland and Barrett, or any other health, food store, and of course Amazon.
*note that this book is for information purposes only and should not be relied upon for the treatment of illness or the creation of medicines.
