[Ad-gifted] Little Lost Tide : A Cats of Crail Story is one story in a collection of delightful tales from author Sarah Rogerson which focus on five Scottish cats, their friends, and their adventures. Inspired by her real-life cats, Luna and Bee, and their imagined adventures in the little fishing village of Crail where Sarah and her family have their home.
Published by Bookvault Publishing, the picture book is aimed at children aged five to ten. This story centres on the cats rescuing a little lost baby puffin and helping to keep is safe, warm, and loved. The combination of its rhyming writing style, beautiful illustrations, and charming characters make it a joyful read.
What we thought of Little Lost Tide?
Jemma, aged five, is on the younger side of the recommended age range, so I read the story to her, and she followed along pointing out the different cats as we meet them in the story. On every page there are lots of beautiful and brightly coloured illustrations which really helped Jemma to follow the story and stay engaged.
The five cats are described wonderfully with their own unique appearance and personality, helping to bring the feline characters to life. We have a pet dog, so of course Jemma is obsessed by cats and was eager to read the book.
The author’s descriptive prose is a little more advanced than some of the writing in Jemma’s other books, but she drank it all in and was mesmerised by the story. I loved the descriptions of the little village of Crail, such as: “Its houses like rainbows, in colours so sweet, line narrow wee streets where folk like to meet.”
Jemma adored the little lost puffin and all of the separate ways that the cats helped him to grow. The story has a lovely message of working together, using your own strengths to help another. But without it feeling like a morality story.
Sarah is a former teacher and includes some helpful questions at the end for you to spend some time discussing the book with your child. Jemma is familiar with this format from her school books and loved chatting about the story.
In fact, the book had such an impact on Jemma that after reading it the first time, she retold the story from memory, using the pictures as prompts.
We will definitely be reading the other Cats of Crail books together.

Sarah Rogerson lives with her husband, Mark, in Crail which is across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh. Luna and Bee, who feature in the books, are real cats who moved with the family. It soon became apparent that they had made their own feline friends in the village and the constant stream of whiskered
neighbours became both a delight to behold and the inspiration for the Cats of Crail series.

I love the story and the fact that the prose isn’t as simple. That’s a great way to draw a young reader in and help them grow in their reading skills at the same time!

The discussion questions at the end are a wonderful addition for young readers, and it’s always a great sign when a child is excited enough to retell the story from memory.
