From Bombay to Britain Cookbook
[Ad-gifted] Did you know that Britain’s first Indian Restaurant was opened in 1810 by a charismatic Bengali entrepreneur named Sake Dean Mohomed? Since that momentous day, Britain’s love for curry has grown and grown and this is Britain’s favourite food. There are about 10,000 Indian restaurants across the UK alone and this number is growing by the day. If you love a good curry and have often enough dined in UK’s most popular restaurants and now would like to recreate the dish at home, then this book offers you the chance to do just that. There are about 50 signature recipes from UK’s finest Indian Restaurants featured in this cookbook. Aptly titled From Bombay to Britain and written by National Curry Week as well as Rhiana-Louise Hughes, all proceeds from the sale of the book goes towards the Curry for Change Charity which help change the lives of rural families in Asia and Africa who suffer from hunger. Do read on and try some of the recipes we have featured here, we are also giving a copy of this book away to our readers, so feel free to join the Competition if you love a little bit of curry in your life!
This is a fabulous coffee table book which we know for certain you will love! The book is well written with lots of attractive photos. What we love most about it is the history behind each dish as well as the story of how the particular restaurant came about. It is also wonderful to read how the featured dish was created. With a foreword by UK’s award-winning Chef Dipna Anand who is also the co-owner of Brilliant Restaurant in Southall, the book showcases popular recipes from famous restaurants around the UK. The restaurants are colour coded according to UK Regions, for easy identification espcially if you are looking for local restaurants. Do try of the recipes which we have shared here on the blog and join the competition to win yourself a copy of this wonderful book! Here’s to Curry, Britain’s most favourite dish!

Here are some recipes from the book for you to try to recreate in your home, this Beetroot Shami Kebab Recipe has been shared by Indian Tiffin Room, if you would like to try the original creation, you could head to their restaurants in Manchester, Cheshire or Leeds. This dish is based on the classic street food dish Shami Kebab which is more commonly a meat-based dish but they have recreated it to be vegetarian-friendly by substitution the meat with beetroot giving the kebab a new and fresh flavour to the dish.

The recipe for the Chicken Tikka Masala dish has been given to us by The Cat’s Pyjamas based in Leeds and York. The owner Alison White wanted to give people good Indian Street food inspired by the local dishes of India’s hawkers which the chef grew up eating. Hope you enjoy recreating this recipe.

Our final recipe share is the Kasundi Mooli Lamb Chops thanks to Dastaan. This dish is the most popular dish served at the restaurant as it is made using their signature marinade. Dastaan is located in Epsom and although just 3 years old, it already has a Michelin Bib Gourmand and an AA rosette award.

About National Curry Week
The first National Curry Week took place in 1998 and it was founded by the late Peter Grove. His vision was to drive awareness and appreciation of the burgeoning Indian restaurant industry, whilst also raising funds for charity. It is now a highly anticipated event in the social calendar and gives everyone all an excuse to revel in the nation’s favourite dish; curry! Celebrated each October for a week, it applauds the diverse culture in the UK and as a result of this, the many delicious dishes available to everyone on a daily basis. The curry week aims to honour the nation’s favourite cuisine, celebrate the burgeoning Indian restaurant industry and to raise money for poverty focussed charities at the same time. The UK’s love of curry is stronger than ever, and National Curry Week continues to grow in importance every year. The event is sponsored by India’s No.1 Beer, Kingfisher Beer which is also the leading Indian beer the world over. Brewed to an authentic and most venerable recipe for more than 150 years, it is the perfect partnership for the heat and spice of even the richest of curries.
About Curry for Change
Did you know that one in nine people around the world suffer from Chronic Hunger because they don’t have enough to eat? The majority of these people live in very remote areas of Asia and Africa, without the means or opportunity to speak out and change their situation for the better. Find Your Feet and Health Poverty Action are the UK charities behind Curry for Change, and they help vulnerable rural families to build a future free from poverty. Find Your Feet and Health Poverty Action help families grow more food so they don’t go hungry, earn an income so they can provide for their families, and access vital information on nutrition and health.
