This new version of Jane Eyre, a co-production with the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, will update the literary masterpiece while remaining true to the original’s revolutionary spirit. Written by Chris Bush (Larksong for the Hoard Festival, New Vic; The Changing Room, National Theatre Connections; Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Sheffield Theatres), and directed by Zoë Waterman (The Kitchen Sink, Table, Playhouse Creatures, New Vic Theatre) this witty and fleet-footed version of the tale will be performed at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-Under-Lyme this May.
This is an accessible new version of a classic packed with a host of 19th century pop hits. Expect to see the iconic character of Jane Eyre in a new and refreshing light.
Jane may be poor, obscure, plain and little, but that does not mean she is without passion. Jane is clever and uncompromising, with no patience for those who do not meet her own high standards. Jane has no respect for authority, but lives by her own strict moral code, no matter what the consequences.

The show starts on Wednesday, 4 May until Saturday, 28 May 2022 with evening shows at 7.30pm and matinee shows at 2.15pm on certain days. There will be:

About The New Vic Theatre
Founded in 1962, the New Vic is the producing theatre for Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. About Stephen Joseph Theatre
The Stephen Joseph Theatre was founded in Scarborough by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph. In 1955 he established the country’s first theatre-in-the-round company on the first floor of the Public Library in Scarborough. Alan Ayckbourn, Stephen’s protégé, was appointed Artistic Director in 1972 and would remain in that post until 2009 having encouraged Stephen’s legacy of new writing with the world premiere of 239 plays by 87 writers during his tenure.
The theatre continued to flourish and in 1976 moved to a supposedly temporary home on the ground floor of the former Scarborough Boys’ High School. However, it wasn’t until 1988 and the closure of the local Odeon cinema that a suitable venue was found. The new theatre, known simply as the Stephen Joseph Theatre, opened on 30th April 1996 and has two auditoria: The Round, a 404-seat in the round and The McCarthy, a 165-seat endstage/cinema.

• They have hand sanitiser stations positioned around the theatre, free to use by all. They are maintaining their high levels of cleanliness throughout the building, ensuring all spaces and contact surfaces are regularly sanitised.
