Try my version of Easy Homemade Granola Recipe!
My husband, Ian, wanted me to buy some granola, but I decided to explore various recipes instead. I searched the internet and carefully assessed each recipe to identify which was healthier and contained the ingredients I preferred, while doing my best to avoid white sugar. Granola is a breakfast staple that can be easily adapted. Not only is it packed with nutrients, but making your own also ensures freshness and allows for a personal touch in terms of flavours and textures.
This Easy Homemade Granola recipe by Tom Kerridge is a simple yet delicious recipe featuring a variety of healthy ingredients. It’s not overly sugary, as it only requires a small amount of maple syrup and honey. The addition of dried fruit not only enhances the sweetness but also adds an array of flavours and textures that make the granola very enjoyable. Granola can be used in various ways; it can be eaten with milk or yogurt, sprinkled over porridge, or even as a topping for desserts.
I opted to avoid American recipes, as they generally tend to be much sweeter than UK variations. Other granola recipes I encountered either had an excessive quantity of oats or less nuts, which may be more economical but do not provide the same flavour. I adore the crunch of the nuts, which adds a satisfying texture to the granola. I didn’t follow the original recipe precisely, as I was out of ingredients like apricots and raisins. Instead, I substituted cranberries, dried figs, and dates, which I believe enhanced the flavor profile. For the nuts, I used what I had available, including flaked almonds, which added a lovely crunch.
For both the nuts and the fruits, I maintained the same proportions, using 150g of mixed nuts and 150g of dried fruits. This flexibility allows you to experiment with different flavour combinations each time you whip up a new batch of granola. For example, you could swap in walnuts for pecans or use dried cherries instead of cranberries. The possibilities are endless, making it a fun and versatile recipe to play around with.
When making your granola, consider the health benefits of your ingredients. Oats are a great source of fibre, which helps with digestion. Nuts provide healthy fats and protein, contributing to satiety. Dried fruits add natural sweetness and are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. By making your own granola, you can control the level of sweetness and ensure it meets your dietary preferences. It’s an excellent breakfast option that can keep you energised throughout the day.

Ingredients for Easy Homemade Granola
(Serves : 16)
300g rolled oats
100g mixed seeds (pumpkin, sunflower & sesame)
50g hazelnuts, roughly chopped
50g pecans, roughly chopped
50g pistachio’s, roughly chopped
50g flaked almonds
50g coconut flakes
150g mixed dried fruit (cranberries, chopped apricots, chopped dried apple, sultanas)
4 tbsp coconut oil
125ml maple syrup
50ml honey
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon ground cardamom
½ teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon sea salt flakes

Method
1: Preheat oven to 150C fan. Line two baking trays with parchment paper.
2: In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, mixed seeds, nuts, and flaked almonds, ensuring even distribution.
3: In a small saucepan, gently heat the coconut oil, maple syrup, honey, vanilla extract, spices, and sea salt. Stir until the coconut oil has melted and the mixture is smooth.
4: Pour the warm mixture over the oat mixture and stir thoroughly to coat all ingredients evenly. Spread the mixture out in a thin layer over the lined baking trays.
5: Roast in the oven for 15 minutes, then remove and mix in the coconut flakes and dried fruit, ensuring even distribution. Return to the oven for a further 8–10 minutes, or until the coconut has browned slightly, giving it a delightful crunch.
6: Once cooked, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely; this will help the granola crisp up.
7: Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness. Serve with fresh fruit and your choice of yoghurt for a deliciously refreshing breakfast.
Granola can be customised to suit your tastes. For a tropical twist, add dried mango and coconut. For a berry blast, incorporate freeze-dried strawberries or blueberries. You can also make your granola chocolatey by adding cocoa powder or chocolate chips. The beauty of this Easy Homemade Granola recipe is that you can personalise it to fit any mood or season, making breakfast something to look forward to.

This looks amazing, we eat granola and must have tried most varieties on the market but have never made my own. I love the idea of making my own and mixing things up a bit for different flavours
It is a great idea, especially if you eat lots of nuts and have them already in your store cupboard

As an American who lives in the UK, I can agree that all of our recipes have FAR MORE sugar! This sounds like an ideal healthy recipe – and easy too.
