[Ad-gifted] Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to combine cherished traditions with something a little unexpected such as a dessert that tastes like celebration and story.
This year, I’m sharing my twist on a beloved German classic: Rotweinkuchen, a moist, spiced red wine cake that brings a rich yet delicate sweetness to the table. What makes it even more special? I’ve chosen Famille Fabre‘s Lux Levis Cinsault,a red wine from France’s Languedoc region to flavour the batter.
What Did I Think of the Red Wine Cake Recipe ?
Rotweinkuchen which literally translates to “red wine cake” is a traditional German treat that blends the flavours of red wine, chocolate, cinnamon and warmth into a loaf that’s both comforting and elegant. I received this recipe from my cousin, Tina who lives in Germany and often bakes this cake using a German dry wine.
Although this is a German cake, I have used a French wine which isn’t just an ingredient but is part of the soul of this cake. Don’t worry if you are serving this to children or those whose don’t drink, as the alcohol evaporates, leaving behind the vibrant fruit notes and a moist texture that’s hard to replicate with pure juice or water. You can use different red wine if you like as well, I am sure the recipe would work perfectly.
In this recipe, the Lux Levis Cinsault brings a lifted, fruity brightness that pairs beautifully with the cocoa and subtle spices. Its light structure keeps the cake from feeling too dense, while its nuanced profile adds an adult sophistication perfect for celebrating your mom, wife or partner on Mother’s Day.
Lux Levis Cinsault is sourced from vineyards sheltered by the slopes of the Montagne Noire (Black Mountain) in the Languedoc region of France hence is one of the finest wines and is best served chilled.
Feel free to serve the cake after a delicious meal of grilled fish or meat. The cake can also be topped up with fresh raspberries to compliment its soft notes of raspberries and liquorice or simply dusted with icing sugar.
Hope you do enjoy the cake as well as the wine and have the best Mother’s Day at home by just using simple ingredients to create something memorable.
German Red Wine Loaf Cake Recipe

200g Fine Sugar
4 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla (optional)
1 tsp Cinnamon Powder

100g roughly chopped dark chocolate
250g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/8L (250ml) Red Wine

Mix butter, sugar till creamy then add and eggs till fluffy. Next, add in cinnamon powder, cacao powder and chopped dark chocolate (I have used chocolate chips as that was all I had at home).
Fold in sieved flour with the baking powder and lastly the red wine.
Bake at 175C for 45 minutes to an hour (time depending on your oven). You can use a loaf pan or small round cake tin. I have used a fluted ring cake tin.
Use cake tester stick to check that its cooked.
Icing
Mix 1-2 tbsp Red Wine with 3/4 cup icing sugar and pour icing over cake when cooled
Alternate Topping: Mix 1 tbsp rum with 1 tbsp icing sugar and spread mixture on cake when its warm or add chocolate ganache when cake is cooled.

Where can you get your bottle of Lux Levis Cinsault and how much is it?
The wine currently retails from £18.83 and can be purchased via distributors here.

They have been building Les Vignobles Foncalieu since 1967 and the men and women that form the group of vignobles, when creating this wonderful wine reveal their winegrowing souls.
About Famille Fabre
Famille Fabre, one of the oldest independent wine producers in the Languedoc region of France, has been owned and managed by the family since 1605. A deep respect for nature led the family to convert their entire vineyard holdings across five châteaux to organic farming in 1991, becoming a pioneer in the region. Today, the 15th and 16th generations of the family continue this legacy, focusing on a blend of tradition, innovation, and environmental stewardship, including producing natural wines with no added sulfites.

red wine and cake…I never had wine mixed with cake. I can’t wait to make your recipe, I can’t wait.
The flavour is so unique and so different
I love the flavour, and the texture looks so moist and tender. I’m going to make this for my mom.
Hope she had a lovely day and enjoyed the cake Beth
I have never seen a cake that has wine in it! Sounds like such a fantastic twist.
The cake sounds wonderful and it is something I have never come across before. It would certainly be one that i would love to enjoy on Mother’s Day. I haven’t had any cakes before with wine in them so it certainly is different!!!!
I’ve never heard to put red wine in cake, but that sounds interesting with the fruity notes. The only one I’ve heard of before is adding Guinness to a chocolate cake to make it richer x
This red wine cake recipe looks super delicious. Love to try it this weekend.
