Opera North’s classic production of La Bohème returns to The Lowry Theatre

Featuring some of the best-loved arias in operatic history, Opera North’s classic production of La Bohème returns to The Lowry Theatre in Manchester this November. Sung in Italian with English titles, audiences will fall for one of the most popular operas of all time. On a cold Christmas night in bohemian Paris, Mimì knocks on Rodolfo’s door in search of a candle light and a love is sparked that changes their lives forever. But can this love survive the harsh winter? Set in the bustling clubs and cafés of early-60s Paris, Phyllida Lloyd’s vibrant production is back with an exciting international cast. Puccini’s tale is told through gloriously moving music that perfectly captures both the overwhelming rush of love at first sight, and the utter devastation of loss.

The inspired take on Puccini’s heart-wrenching opera was originally conceived by Phyllida Lloyd – who went on to direct the films Mamma Mia! and the Oscar-winning The Iron Lady. She transports the action to the smoky cafés and garrets of 1960s Paris where we witness the tragic love affair between two impoverished bohemians, seamstress Mimì and poet Rodolfo, who meet and fall in love one freezing Christmas Eve. Two casts alternate in the lead roles, Australian soprano Lauren Fagan makes her role debut as Mimì fresh from a brilliant performance at this summer’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. While Thomas Atkins, who returns to the role of Rodolfo having performed it for his native New Zealand Opera last year. He’ll be singing his dream line to Katie Bird. She has sung the role at Longborough and Nevill Holt previously, as well as covering it for English National Opera. Mexican tenor Eleazar Rodriguez, will be singing Rodolfo for the first time opposite Lauren’s Mimì.

La bohème is being performed alongside Martinů’s The Greek Passion and Handel’s Giulio Cesare as part of Opera North’s Autumn Season at The Lowry.
