Review: Studycat Language Learning App for Spanish

We were excited to have been asked to review Studycat Language Learning App for children. The app is designed for young learners in mind to help ignite the children’s natural learning abilities with educational games that encourage critical thinking and speaking a second or third language.  Studycat offers five languages which include Spanish, English, French, Chinese and German.   We picked Spanish as both my children are learning this at the moment.

Designed by Studycat’s award-winning team of teachers and education experts who have over 20 years of experience, the app is created with teaching young children in mind.  I find apps like this is such a great way for children to learn a new language without feeling like they are studying.  I let both my children have a go at Studycat, my daughter who is older and found it a little simple while my son really enjoyed it and is still playing on this as I write this post.   This app is perfect for young children as it is a great way for them to learn the sound, pronunciation, spelling and understanding simple phrases from a very young age.  There are lots of topics on it such as colours, animals, the body, vehicles and sea creatures amongst others.  My son had to play each game at least once before he was able to unlock the game and proceed to the next level.

If you have been meaning to get your child to learn another language in a fun way then read on to find out what we thought of this language learning app.

What did we think about it?

Studycat App is definitely not boring or cumbersome as my son found it fun and exciting to play the games app and kept asking me if he can use the app whenever he had a break time in between his homeschooling lessons.  There is not much introduction or instructions on the app and my son started it immediately just as he would if he went to a Spanish school which is great for the children to be immersed directly into the language without expecting a translation for everything.

You also have the choice of subscribing to the app on a monthly or yearly basis. I think it is a great way to get your child to learn a language if he/she is able to practise this every day for 20 minutes. It will help get your child into a familiar routine and ready for when he/she needs to use their new language skills. One more benefit of Studycat is that you are able to trial the app for Free for 30 days so this would give your child the chance to try out the app to see if this is something they like before you purchase it.  Do scroll below if you would like a 10% Discount Code for this app.

This is what son Thomas had to say about the app:

Studycat offers give languages and we chose Spanish. What I like most about the app is, it’s not boring like the other apps and it did not make me want to fall asleep in one second.  It is actually fun and I really enjoyed it.  I kept playing some of the games multiple times as I can keep playing it over and over again.   You need to play each game at least once to unlock the next game.  One thing I realised is that I could finish a game once and move on but I might not remember what I did, so I decided to keep playing the game a few times so I can remember what I learnt better.

Studycat’s library consists of over 100 worksheets for you to download and enjoy. You can use the filters to find worksheets by language, skills and topic. This is a great way for your child to learn a new language without feeling like they are studying it but more like they are having fun.   I found that these games on the app were not only fun but very engaging as well. The website mentions that at the end of the year, your child will be able to learn to read, speak and spell 200+ Spanish words and phrases.  Your child would also be able to master Spanish pronunciation, listening and comprehension skills.

Can Learning a New Language Help Improve Memory?

It’s called digital amnesia: Nowadays, we are entrusting our phones with all the things we used to remember on our own, effectively diminishing our memory. One in two people can’t remember their children’s phone number, one in three can’t even remember their partner’s phone number.

How can we train our ability to remember? Learning languages can help the brain improve concentration and aid memory

From Plato’s aversion for writing, the culprit of taking away some of our memory, to fun facts about polyglots and the language of space, this infographic will take you on a journey into our ability to remember, and the help that learning one or more languages can provide.

Short lessons, a new routine and spaced repetition are all useful tips and practices to help one’s memory not only with a new language, but also in all everyday situations, as proven by a Swedish study: Those who take language courses are better at remembering names of the people they just met.

This sounds like a really useful app. My son was really enjoying Spanish at school then they changed it to French this year and he’s gutted – he’d probably love this app.

This sounds like a great app. My daughters are currently learning spanish and I think they could do with something more fun as they like the language but I think the learning currently is a bit dull. We will definitely check this out. I could do with brushing up on my own GCSE spanish if I am honest!

I’d love to learn another language, or brush up one of the languages I studied at school and an app like this would certainly engage me more than just a phrase or text book x

Kids don’t often have the longest attention span so if your son wasn’t bored then it must be a really good app.
