Review: Little Cook Box Chicken, Fish and Lamb Kids Meal *

Little-Cook-Box-Kids-Meals-Prepared-Blogger-Review-UK-Meals

If you have fussy eaters and would like them to try to eat a variety of food then why not try getting them to cook their own dinner? We have been told that kids tend to eat their food if they know what is inside it and if they cook  their own food. So here’s introducing Little Cook Box for little cooks and three of their meals (which we review) which is the Haddock au Gratin, Lamb Kebabs and the Chicken Goujons. This is a great idea when mum is going out for a day out with friends or having to work outstation and dads are wondering how to make meal times for the kids more fun and exciting for the little ones. Alternatively, this is also a great meal idea if your kids are having friends over for a sleep over or even a birthday party celebration. It makes it all that much more fun.

Lamb Kebabs Kit with Pilau rice and zesty yoghurt dip

Let’s start out review with the first dish, wish is the lamb kebabs. As you can see each of the ingredients have been carefully placed in compartments and clear instruction is stated at the back of the kit. We love the fact that our kids sat down to read the instruction first then followed through by mixing the ingredients themselves.  This dish only took about 30 minutes to make and was so quick and easy.   The lamb was marinated with some spices and herbs then baked in the oven with the skewer.  The rice was just partially cooked hence while waiting for the lamb to cook, we prepared the rice, the instruction asked us to use a microwave to cook the rice. We don’t have a microwave so I used the stove to steam the rice which only took minutes. There was no vegetables to go with the dish, just a garnish.  Our kids love lamb but we had not had a kebab before so I was interested to find out what in what they thought about it.

What we thought about the Lamb Kebabs?

  1. Everything is pre-prepared so you don’t need to go out any buy any more items. All the ingredients was placed in compartments as well.
  2. Our kids got really excited about making the kebabs and mixing the ingredients into the bowl. Everything was dead easy.
  3. The Kits had an expiry date of 3 days (from the day we received it) so that meant, we could keep the kit and cook it the next day
  4. There were cheeky monkeys to spot on the box, which was great activity to do while the kids were waiting for their food to be ready
  5. My kids felt that the herb mix was a little too strong in the lamb and the rice was nice
  6. We wish the dish came with side vegetables to serve as the only thing green on the plate was the parsley and it was more for garnish. So we had to prepare our own vegetables to go with the dish.

In the kit

  • Minced lamb
  • Pilau Rice
  • Herb Mix
  • Yoghurt
  • Spice Mix
  • 2x Skewers & Parsley Leaf

Chicken Goujons Kit

For our second review, we received the Chicken Goujons Kit, which was a complete hit! This is something we make at most quite often hence kids loved the idea of having this for their dinner.

What we thought about it?

  • Everything is pre-prepared so you don’t need to go out any buy any more items (except for the egg and flour). All the ingredients was placed in compartments as well.
  • The fact that the pieces of chicken are pre-cut it makes much less mess
  • Our kids got really excited about making the breaded chicken
  • They ate everything except for the relish (which was delish by the way)
  • Item was delivered with ice packs and we clear indications was made when the delivery was going to take place so we did not miss it.
  • Clear instructions are indicated on the back of the box, so even if you can’t cook and your kids are young. It is so easy to follow.
  • There was only 2 small tortilla wraps included in the box, which was not enough, so luckily we had some spare wraps at home
  • We were initially dubious as to how nice it would be as we cook from fresh all the time, but we all had a taste and we’re really impressed with the quality and taste. The kids loved doing it and due to the fact that it was all portioned out did make it easy for them to do practically with no help from an adult.

Here’s a photo of both the chicken wrap and the lamb kebabs

In the Kit

  • Chicken Strips
  • 2x Flour Tortilla
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Tomato Relish
  • Mayonnaise
  • Lettuce

(For this recipe we needed to add in some store cupboard ingredients such as an egg and some plain flour which did not come in the box)

Haddock au Gratin

For our third dish, we were sent Haddock au Gratin or in layman’s term, haddock fish pie. Again this was something our kids eat often and we were wondering how this version (with the breaded crumbs instead of mash potatoes) will fair.

What we thought about it?

  • Our kids really enjoying mixing the fish with the cheese mix and sprinkling the breadcrumbs on the dish
  • The dish came with lots of vegetables such as carrots and beans and new potatoes as well which was really good and wholesome
  • They ate all the fish but not the topping as they did not like the breadcrumb mix
  • Everything is pre-prepared so you don’t need to go out any buy any more insgredients. All the items were placed in compartments as well so it was easy to scoop them out.
  • The fish was delivered with ice packs and clear indications were made when the delivery was going to take place so we did not miss it. We found the fish to be tasty and fresh.
  • Clear instructions are also indicated on the back of the box, so even if you can’t cook and your kids are young. It is so easy to follow.

What’s great about the Cook Box?

  • Allergens are clearly indicated on the box
  • The portion size for each child was perfect, the ingredients were also accurately measured as we did not have any extras
  • The contents such as protein, fat, energey, fibre, salt etc is clearly indicated on the box as well, so you exactly know how much of it that you are consuming
  • Handy tips explaining about handling of raw meat and fish as well as cleaning is clearly explained in the box
  • The Kits had expiry date of 3 days so that meant, we could cook it the next day
  • There were cheeky monkeys to spot on the box, which was great activity to do while the kids were waiting for their food to be ready

What we did not like about Cook Box?

  • Although the plastic packaging were all recyclable, we felt there was way just too much packaging and felt guilty when we had to eat the dish especially with our current environmental situation of too much plastic waste in the ocean.  We love the concept of the Cook Box but feel that they do need to change it up so that less plastic packaging is used in the future.

This is SUCH a great idea! Luke used to be the fussiest eater ever. He was awful all the way until last summer – his last summer before starting school and experiencing school dinners. We spent ages trying to crack his habit and found that cooking together and cooking the meals he was going to eat was the best way to fix the problem! 😀
