The Top 4 Destinations to Visit in Italy

Italy is a country with much to offer. In this place, the fortunes of the wider world have been shaped. The Roman Empire took root here, as, later, did the Catholic Church. And that’s before we even consider the Renaissance and the master artists and composers produced by this part of the world.

Modern Italy provides an unrivaled combination of natural wonder, history, and gastronomic culture. If you’re looking to take a vacation here, however, there are four destinations that stand apart as uniquely appealing in their own ways.

Amalfi Coast

You’ll find this gorgeous stretch of coastline just to the south of Naples. With a blend of precipitous, winding roads and hilltop walking trips, it’s great for those who want to make travel a part of the experience. In the evening, you’ll get a chance to dine against the iconic backdrop formed by pastel-shaded towns and villages, nestled amongst the hills. For those planning hiking trips in Italy, it’s a particular favourite; you’ll also want to make a stop in Minori, a UNSECO site with a rich gastronomic history.

Rome

Of course, no round-up of essential destinations in Italy would be complete without mention of the capital, Rome. You can take a stroll through three millennia of history here, in just a single afternoon. Make time for the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Forum, before making your way over to the Vatican.

While you’re in the Vatican City, you’ll need to abide by the dress code – which means covering up your shoulders and legs. If you’re visiting during the middle of summer, it’s a good idea to pack some breathable attire!

Tuscany

This idyllic corner of Italy is best known for its rolling hills, all swaddled in vineyards and punctuated with little hilltop settlements. This, historically, has been a highly-contested region, and you’ll see this reflected in many of the towns and villages.

The region’s cultural and artistic center, of course, is Florence. Here, we find several incredible galleries, among other attractions. You’ll also be able to learn about the House of Medici here, and how their influence steered the region toward success. The city’s gorgeous architecture speaks to a golden age – and walking amongst it provides incredible inspiration.

Milan

Finally, we come to Milan. This is a city best known in the modern era for its influence on fashion, but you’ll find plenty of history in evidence among the stunning buildings. The city is perhaps less popular with tourists than many of its rivals in Italy, which means that you’ll get a more authentically Italian experience, particularly if you go to the right places. This is a must-visit for those with any interest in shopping, or fashion.
