8 Fabulous Places to Visit in Dorset and Beyond

Have you started planning your 2026 holidays yet?  As we get ready to take a grip on the New Year, we are sharing our last travel round up post from 2025, when we went to Dorset during Summer.

Planning family days out can be both exciting and challenging at the same time, especially when you want experiences that keeps everyone happy from little ones to teens as well as adults. But don’t worry, we have done all the work for you by sharing 8 fabulous places you can visit in and around Dorset.  Planning family days out can be both exciting and challenging at the same time, especially when you want experiences that keeps everyone happy from little ones to teens as well as adults. While some prefer spending their leisure time online checking regional platforms like 1xbet malaysia for sports updates, nothing beats a classic outdoor adventure. To help you balance your schedule, we have done all the work for you by sharing 8 fabulous places you can visit in and around Dorset.

We picked Dorset as it was the perfect place to visit, we wanted to enjoy the beautiful countryside, dramatic coastline and I wanted to tick Durdle Door off my bucket list. That being said, travelling with four teenagers in tow, we also had to make sure that we planned plenty of  days out to keep them engaged. After busy days exploring the area, we also enjoyed relaxing in the evenings by watching movies, playing board games and browsing online entertainment options.

The 8 places that we are featuring in this post includes Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove, Jurassic Coast Fossil Museum, Portland Bill Lighthouse Visitor’s Centre, Portland Castle, Tout Quarry Nature Reserve and Sculpture Park, Lyme Regis, Stonehenge and Cheddar Gorge.

So keep on reading to find out more about our adventures and recommendations.

8 Fabulous Places to Visit in Dorset

Durdle Door & Lulworth Cove

We stayed at the Dorset Caravan Park, for the week which was not too far from Durdle Door, a famous natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, England, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

My advice would be to head to Durdle Door towards the evening if you are not planning to swim but just want to take some photo and indulge in the view, as there are less visitors and you would be able to have the whole place to yourself to take as many selfies as you like with no one blocking your view. On the other hand, if you plan to spend the whole day there, you can of course bring a picnic, bucket & spade and spend a few hours swimming (if the weather permits) and digging for fossil with your little ones.

8 Fabulous Places to Visit in Dorset

Lulworth Cove is the closest village to Durdle Door and offers one of the most spectacular view. You can walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door and the walk will take you around half an hour.

Although the first section of the walk involves walking uphill, the slope is fairly gentle and the path is wide and well made but totally worth it as the views of the cliff tops are absolutely stunning.

8 Fabulous Places to Visit in Dorset

Jurassic Coast Fossil Museum

We always try to make a point to visit a Museum with our kids when we travel and this time, it was only apt that we visited Jurassic Coast Fossil Museum to learn more about the dinosaurs. The museum is a fantastic family attraction and a must-do experience when exploring Dorset especially on a wet day.  Located in Dorchester, the museum offers educational introduction to the area’s world-famous fossils and dramatic prehistoric history. It’s an ideal stop for families, especially those with curious children who love dinosaurs, rocks and hands-on interactive learning.

The museum is designed to be engaging for all ages, with interactive displays, real fossils, and clear explanations that make complex science easy to understand. Children can see ancient ammonites, marine reptiles, and fossils discovered right along the nearby beaches, helping them connect what they see indoors with what they might find outside. Friendly staff are often on hand to answer questions and share fascinating facts, making the visit feel personal and welcoming.

What makes Jurassic Coast Fossil Museum particularly special is how it encourages families to explore together. After visiting, many families head straight to the beach to try fossil hunting themselves, turning learning into an adventure.

8 Fabulous Places to Visit in Dorset

Portland Bill Lighthouse Visitor’s Centre

Visiting Portland Bill Lighthouse Visitor’s Centre was a memorable day for us as it offered a perfect mix of history, scenery and adventure.

Located at the southern tip of the Isle of Portland, the working lighthouse stands proudly above the dramatic coastline with sweeping sea views that instantly capture everyone’s attention.  We were super lucky that the weather was just perfect on the day we visited, hence we managed to climb to the top the lighthouse, enjoy a picnic by the seafront and indulge in a relaxing walk after as we absorbed the stunning view.

We found the Lighthouse Visitor’s Centre perfect for little ones as there were interactive displays, models and short films to help children understand how the lighthouse works and why it was so vital before modern navigation technology came into play.

Portland Castle

Portland Castle is another fabulous place to head to as a family if you’re in Dorset on holiday. Set on the beautiful Isle of Portland overlooking Portland Harbour, this 16th-century coastal artillery fort was built by Henry VIII and today brings history to life for visitors of all ages. Entry is free for members of English Heritage but there is a fee for non-members. I would recommend to pre-book your visit online to get cheaper tickets.

We enjoyed our visit as our children had the chance to explore the castle’s armoury, gun platforms and Tudor kitchen, where interactive exhibits helped them imagine life in Tudor times.  Our teens did not want to try out the period costumes, so we decided to get dressed instead.  Do also ask the reception about trails for little ones to keep them keen on the historic site.

We thoroughly enjoyed the view from the upper walls as we could see the stunning coastal views across the harbour and out to sea, the perfect spot for brilliant family photos.  There is also a small on-site Captain’s Tearoom which serves light lunches, sandwiches and cream teas, perfect to refuel and recharge. We also enjoying exploring the garden and sat down in silence reminiscing about its history before we left.

Tout Quarry Nature Reserve and Sculpture Park

Tout Quarry Sculpture Park & Nature Reserve on the Isle of Portland is a fantastic free family destination to add to your Dorset holiday itinerary. This unique attraction combines art, nature, history and outdoor adventure in a way that’s perfect for curious kids and adults alike.

Stonehenge

On our way back from Dorset to the Midlands, we decided to stop off Stonehenge in Wiltshire. I can say that it was truly an unforgettable experience and again we were blessed with beautiful weather as we admired the prehistoric monument.

Stonehenge is bound to be busy, more so in summer, hence do ensure that you have pre-booked your visiting time slots. If you are a member of National Trust or English Heritage, then entry to Stonehenge is free. There is also plenty to do at the Visitor’s Centre with interactive exhibits and displays giving children the opportunity to learn about the Neolithic homes, tools and their daily life.  You would need to park at the designated area, which is at the Visitor’s Centre and either take a 5 minute bus ride or a short 30-minute walk to Stonehenge.

It is worth visiting the sacred and spiritual place if you have the opportunity as it features enormous stones arranged with remarkable precision, including lintels balanced across upright Sarsen Stones (some weighing around 25 tons) to form circles and horseshoe shapes.

Some of the stones such as the Bluestones were transported over 150 miles from Wales, which is astonishing given the limited technology of the time. Even today, experts are still debating exactly how the monument was constructed and what its full purpose was, adding to its mystery and appeal.

Cheddar Gorge

After visiting Stonehenge, we continued our day trip to Cheddar Gorge before heading home as it made a brilliant stop for us to break our journey before driving back to Stoke-on-Trent.

Located in Somerset, Cheddar Gorge is England’s largest natural limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills and offers a dramatic change of scenery, with towering limestone cliffs, winding roads and stunning countryside views that immediately impressed us as we drove towards it.

Days Out in Dorset and Beyond

Cheddar Gorge is located near the village of Cheddar and is free for families to explore (as we did) on foot and shopping for local products such as apple cider and cheddar cheese whilst other attractions such as cheese making activities, exploring famous caves, rock climbing and Jacob’s Ladders walk via the main attraction entrance requires a fee.

We found that after exploring the historical Stonehenge, Cheddar Gorge was truly refreshing and made a great stop to enjoy ice-cream, a snack and buy local produce before we started on our journey home.

Where did we stop on the motorway for some good food and local farm food shopping ?

I generally detest motorway stops as I often only find the standard fast food chains and coffee shops, so it is often a quick stop and go for us. But we were lucky to find that there was a farmshop and kitchen available on both ways of our journey which was selling homemade food and fresh local produce.

We stopped off at Glouster Services Farmshop & Kitchen – Glouster (Southbound) GL4 0WW on our way to Dorset for lunch and stopped off at Glouster (Northbound) GL4 0DN for our dinner and some local farm food shopping before heading home from Cheddar Gorge.

We found the Glouster Services are not your usual fast-food pit stop but they are family-friendly rest places which celebrates proper local food as well as facilities for families.

Days Out in Dorset and Beyond

Both services features a Farmshop stocked with produce from more than 130 local producers, including native-breed meats, artisan cheeses, freshly baked breads, handmade pastries and regional treats you won’t find elsewhere (we found more freshly baked goods in the morning compared to the evening).

It is also a great place to pick up picnic supplies for the rest of your journey or sit down for a hot meal if you have been on a long car journey and don’t fancy cooking a meal once you get home.

Days Out in Dorset and Beyond

The kitchen serves home-cooked meals from scratch using locally sourced ingredients such as full English breakfasts, hearty lasagne, pies, fish and chips and a decent vegetarian/vegan option, all served in a beautiful relaxed space overlooking a pond.

Do check out for offers where kids can eat hot meals at a discounted price with an adult meal.  There was also indoor play area, toilet facilities, dog-friendly spaces and other accessible facilities on both northbound and southbound sites.

Gorgeous pics! I’d love to explore more of this region, but we’re so far North I think the journey is 8+ hours in the car. It might be closer to 10. I really like the look of Tout Quarry. I’ve not heard of it before, but it looks lovely! And cheddar gorge! It looks like such a gorgeous part of the UK. I wish we weren’t so far away.

Then it is best to break up the journey and make a few stops along the way so you don’t feel the drive. Hope you do come to this part of the country as it is just stunning there.

Yes it was such a rewarding walk, the view definitely compensated and did not feel like it was a trek to Durdle Door at all
