What did my 12-year-old daughter think of the book?
Cassie Morgan is a 12 year old girl who is an outcast at Fowell House (a boarding school). In her free time, when she is not trying to be invisible to all the students, she likes to read books about faeries in a school where faeries are apparently not real. But after 7 years of waiting for her mother to return the school decides to kick her out and send her to Mr Burnhopes home for children. Cassie, not wanting to go their decides to do the only thing she thinks she can do. Run away. She decides to find her mother herself.
The world around her, however is full of magic and mystery. In addition, children have been going missing! With the help of a old battered broom and a talking cat she fly’s herself of to the spellbinding village, Hedgely. Here, Cassie will train to become a witch, and a expert in witchcraft witch (get it… witch / which!) might just help her get lots of steps closer to finding her missing mother.
Personally, I think that Hedgewitch is a really good book. I like how Cassie Morgan has the guts to go and escape her horrid school when they plan to kick her out and send her to a home for children. I also like how, no matter how many times everyone in her boarding school tells her that faeries aren’t real she does not believe them. Cassie is a brave, determined, rebellious and a bit shy girl and I think she makes a amazing main character. I enjoyed reading the book and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

About the Author
Skye McKenna grew up in a mining town in the Australian outback. Surrounded by the red dust of the Pilbara, she developed a healthy respect for wild things and wild places at a young age. Seeking adventures of her own, she travelled to the UK and fell in love with the British countryside. Skye now lives in Scotland and works for a heritage charity, with whom she recently curated an exhibition on medieval magic. When she’s not reading and writing, she goes looking for stories in the hills and forests of her new home.
