The Happy Book by Alex Allen
[Ad-gifted] With the world recently in panic mode it’s easy to let feelings of anxiousness and worry creep in.
As adults, we’re usually equipped with the tools to better cope with our emotions but how about our children? They’ve experienced such change recently, it’s so important right now to talk openly with them about their feelings so when we were approached to review The Happy Book – Understanding your Feelings, from Welbeck Publishing I was really keen.
Keep on reading to find out more about the book and how you can win yourself a copy of it.
About the book
The book is full of ideas and thoughtful prompts designed to help engage with a child who might be suffering from anxiety or feeling sad. The message is clear, if you are feeling unhappy – share your troubles and don’t let those bad feelings build up. There are top tips to help young children identify their emotions while the mini science sections explain what happens in the body and brain.

What we thought of The Happy Book
The Happy Book is just beautiful. When I first received it I thought it would be perfect for my daughter Margot, 3, and I to read together but as I flicked through the book, I knew my 7-year-old Sebastian would benefit too. It focuses on teaching children about their feelings and explains in easy-to-understand terms the science behind our emotions without being overly complicated.
My youngest isn’t really aware of the current global situation and whilst we are honest with our children we have protected them as much as we can to avoid any worry. That said, our inquisitive 7-year-old has talked openly about feeling frustrated with not being able to see his friends and is as tired as the adults of lockdown life.
Both Margot and Seb enjoyed reading the book and with each new emotion that’s introduced, it gave us the chance to talk about when we’ve felt those feelings in the past and what caused us to feel that way. The book acts as a good conversation starter and shows young people that their emotions are entirely valid and not feeling happy 100% of the time is absolutely fine. There are also tips on how to improve happiness and further reading for grownups at the back of the book.
