Our House is on Fire’ is a stark and honest account of the battles this family faced to identify successfully and begin to overcome the barriers that Greta and Beata had.
The family struggles and is forced to fight against a system in Sweden which seemed lacking in its ability to support effectively children with additional needs.
The book shows how a family hits breaking point as they’re not sure which way to turn, but their determination wins through and they begin to break the mould on a personal and an international level. The family’s resolve to get their daughters the support they need pays off and eventually Greta is given a diagnosis of Asperger’s and her sister, Beata, is diagnosed with ADHD.
While the personal battles are ongoing, Greta’s teacher opens her eyes to the grave consequences of climate change. Greta is beside herself and makes it her, and therefore the family’s, mission to do something about it and raise awareness. This starts with school strikes outside the Swedish Parliament. Greta’s determination inspires her family to be more proactive and consider more seriously the carbon footprint that everyone has a responsibility to reduce. They rail against the lack of media coverage and decide that if the population of the world’s media isn’t going to rise to the challenge of raising awareness to save the planet from catastrophe, then they need to ignite the spark that will encourage more people to contribute to saving the planet.
If you want an escapist read where you don’t have to think very much Our House is on Fire is not the book for you. The book inspires you and, I’m not going to lie, instils panic that the world needs to act now to make some changes. The writers do not dress the issue up or pretend that things are ok. This book draws the reader’s attention to the planet’s danger and what needs to happen to change this. Our House is on Fire made me have a real look at what small part we can do to contribute to making a change before our house literally burns down! The way that the book is written conveys just how urgently the world needs to act.

About the Author
Greta, Beata, Malena and Svante are campaigners for the climate.
Greta Thunberg was born in 2003. In August 2018, she started a school strike for the climate outside the Swedish Parliament that has since spread all over the world and now involves over 1 million schoolchildren. The movement is now called Fridays For Future. Thunberg has spoken at climate rallies across Europe. In December she attended the United Nations COP24 in Katowice, Poland, where she addressed the Secretary-General and made a speech that was shared many million times around the globe. In January 2019 she was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos where her speeches again made a worldwide impact. She has won the prestigious Prix Liberté and been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Thunberg is vegan, and doesn’t fly, in order to live a low-carbon life.
