There is nothing more quintessentially British then to enjoy a cup of cream tea, scones and delicious cakes in the Summer with your family or friends, and that is exactly what we did at Whitmore Tea Rooms in Newcastle-Under-Lyme recently.
Whitmore Tea Rooms is a traditional English tea room, the building itself is over 150 years old and was originally a coach house with lodgings.
In more recent years, it has been an art gallery, tea room and fine dining restaurant. Its solid oak beams and lead lined windows continue to attract customers from all over the country and abroad who are drawn by its old world English heritage charm….and what a place to enjoy an afternoon tea experience.
Whitmore Tea Rooms serves not only freshly baked scones (in fact they just baked a fresh batch of cherry scones when we were there) and homemade cakes for their afternoon tea but they also offer light lunches if you prefer that.
I love my scones and cakes and often bake at home but sometimes it is lovely to head out with friends and indulge a little. Whitmore Tea Rooms is such a lovely gem, the surrounding areas are stunning and they have such a beautiful outdoor areas with two lovely peacocks walking around.
We were guided to our table and asked to pick our choice of tea and two sandwich choices from salmon, egg, cheese, beef, chicken or coronation chicken.
We were also asked to pick just one cake from a selection of carrot cake, victoria sponge, cheery and chocolate cake or raspberry and chocolate cupcake. Finally, we had choose between the fruit, cherry, plain or raspberry and white chocolate scones.
We found this a little strange as we are often served a variety of sandwiches and cakes at the Afternoon Teas’ we have been to before to try, instead of just picking one/two items. Since there were four of us, we decided to choose a selection between us, to share.
Our scones arrived nice and warm served with clotted cream and raspberry preserve and they were warm and delicious! Again there were only two jam preserves provided although there were four of us. The sandwiches tasted lush and I really enjoyed both the coronation chicken and beef sandwich which I tried. I ordered the chocolate and raspberry cupcake and that was again moist and moreish.
The food portions were perfect and we had enough to eat as we were full. The ambience in the tea room was also very lovely as it felt like we stepped back in time. All the cups and plates were vintage and the whole tea room looked cosy and inviting. We would definitely head back there again, but would have preferred if we had a wider selection of sandwiches and cakes to try.

Where is Whitmore Tea Rooms?
From Newcastle-Under-Lyme, take the A53 towards market drayton/shrewsbury for approx. 5minutes, this should take you over the motorway bridge and onto a mini roundabout, keep going straight on for approx. 0.5 miles and at the junction take a right onto Three Mile Lane, our car park is immediately left adjoining the pub.
There are regular bus routes every hour from Newcastle-Under-Lyme directly to Whitmore. Their stop is the Mainwaring Arms stop which is directly opposite the pub and 2 minutes walk to the tea room.
Accessible by Public Transport: Stoke-on-Trent station is 6 miles away.

Please make reservations before heading there, especially on the weekends.
Do note, they do not book seating for their outdoor area. Dogs welcomed in their outdoor dining area.
