Little Book of Dior by Karen Homer
[Ad-gifted] In a time where we are all restricted to the confines of our homes, without the liberty of being able to soak up fashion on the streets, you might wonder how else you will get your fashion fix?
We have the answer here with our latest book review where you can enjoy fashion of times gone by, in these pages all about Dior.
Dior is an iconic in the world of Fashion and what better way to read all about him than in The Little Book of Dior by Karen Homer and published by Welbeck Publishing.
Here Homer, has cleverly pieced together Dior’s biography, in a way that is easy to pick up and put down, and not get lost along the way. This book is small enough to be popped on your bedside for a truly enjoyable read.

What I thought of Little Book of Dior
I absolutely love Fashion and already own a book on The New Look, which is all about how Dior came up with some of his iconic designs and how so many people and designers were inspired by them. So when I received this lovely little hardback book, I couldn’t wait to get my teeth into it! Dior is such an important part of French Fashion House History, I really couldn’t wait to know more about how he grew from fashion illustrator to become one of the most sought after brands in the World.
It’s crazy to think that Dior started his Fashion House in 1947 and died only 10 years later, however, within this time, he became so established that we still know and love his brand today. Dior is synonymous with the New Look, which we know from the 1950s. Rationing was no longer taking place which meant that there were no restrictions of the amount of fabric that could be used to make clothing, therefore, his skirts made the most of this and were big and full, which became the look of the 1950s.
His success was mainly down to his savvy skills as a businessman, he knew that by allowing his patterns to be made up by seamstresses in large stores (in Britain and America) meant that he could open up is Fashion House to the middle classes, allowing more people to own Dior. They could own it without the Dior price tag, which meant that his brand became accessible to a wider market, and therefore, known by more than the fraction of the population that were upper class. But he still managed to keep his credibility with the upper classes, by ensuring that when his clothes came from his Fashion House, they maintained the quality he was known for. And when made up by the carefully selected seamstresses in the stores that, although, were still good quality they were not quite to the level as if they had come directly from Dior in Paris.
He can also credit his success in his choice of his predecessor. He had no inkling he would die at such a young age, so suddenly, yet only months before his death he had already chosen Yves Saint Laurent to take over as designer of his House. This as we know now was a great decision, and meant that his brand could continue long after he was gone. The book also expands on this and tells you of how Dior’s success continued through the visions of several designers who have also become iconic in their own right.
The book is well written and an enjoyable read. Homer has given you a real insight into how Dior became the designer we know and love. The book is really beautiful and would make the perfect gift. The fact that its hardback makes it all the more desirable and will be firmly placed on my bookshelf along with all the other fashion books I own and love. What’s great is that I know my daughter, who already has shown an interest in fashion, will be able to pick this up and use it as a reference if she ever wants to study in this field. So if you have a passion for fashion and want to forget about our current climate read on to find out how you can win a copy of this book.
