Book How to Kill Men and Get Away With It

[Ad-gifted] As serial killers go, on the surface of things, Kitty Collins doesn’t fit the standard profile. However, serial killer she is, and woe betide any misogynistic man who does not live up to her high expectations. Published by HQ Digital, How to Kill Men and Get Away with it is a richly dark (or even darkly rich) tale of macabre humour.

It is written by Katy Brent, author and award-winning journalist, and tells the story (from the perspective of our often accidental murderess) of the trials and tribulations of a troubled, privileged ‘Influencer’ left to wallow in a luxurious penthouse by her distant mother, whilst trying to deal with her self-proclaimed ‘daddy issues’.

Kitty’s own father has ‘mysteriously’ disappeared and she is harbouring commitment issues as a result of her first real love breaking her heart. Ironically, she is a vegan who is heir to a meat fortune and although she is repulsed by the way her family’s fortune has been accrued, Kitty’s slaughterous behaviour means that her father’s abattoirs come in extremely useful. If you’re as hooked as some of Kitty’s victims, then the first thing I’d do is warn your husband or partner that you’re reading this book. Trust me, it’s not a title you want to leave casually around the house without providing some context first! Reassurance that this is not simple an instruction manual is definitely needed!!

What I thought of the Book

When the words ‘social media influencer are muttered’, they can induce huge inner sighs and feelings of scorn about everything that’s wrong with the world of social media. However, Kitty would entirely agree with you. Although grateful for the freedom that her thousands of followers give her to enjoy the luxurious lifestyle that she has become accustomed to, Kitty uses her profile brilliantly to hide what she believes is her real job in the world: to rid the Earth of undeserving men!

Book How to Kill Men and Get Away With It

Kitty definitely doesn’t suffer fools and her one woman crusade to rid the world of those men who she believes the world is better off without, is at times, hilariously funny yet emotive. The book is quite graphic and I’ll admit that it’s not what I usually sign up for when committing time to curl up and escape. However, Kitty’s wit and cynicism of the world around her and her (often unwitting accidental) homicides, create an engaging character who you root for. You’ll laugh, feel uncomfortable and cry along with the heroine (if you’re allowed to call a serial killer that).

I’m not sure if Katy Brent wanted to produce anything other than something darkly entertaining; however, How to Kill Men does challenge stereotypes and evoke questions about accountability and who has the right to be judge, jury and in this case executioner! Aside from the killing, there’s also a helpful dose of romance and friendship (although the latter proves quite tricky for our dear Kitty in some respects!). This helps to balance out the macabre and the reader can follow Kitty to see whether she is able to get herself out of the sticky situations that she finds herself in or whether it’ll all end up in the mincer like some of her victims!

I’ve seen this bright cover around quite a lot and would love to read it, but alas my TBR pile is way too long now. I do like how it sounds like an untraditional murder/ crime type of book x
