It is time for another book review and this time we share Sophia Money-Coutts‘ What Happens Now? Thank you once again to Harper Collins’ HQ Book Club for sending a copy of the book and inviting us to join the Blog Tour. What can I say? …well …it is definitely perfect as a summer read especially if you love modern-day love story with a lot of light-hearted humour. There will be lots of questions on what happens next plus let me warn you…blushing sex scenes included in the book. Synopsis
After eight years together, Lil Bailey thought she’d already found ‘the one’ – that is, until he dumped her for a blonde twenty-something colleague. So she does what any self-respecting singleton would do: swipes right, puts on her best bra and finds herself on a first date with a handsome mountaineer called Max. What’s the worst that can happen?
Well, it’s pretty bad actually. First Max ghosts her and then, after weeing on a stick (but mostly her hands), a few weeks later Lil discovers she’s pregnant. She’s single, thirty-one and living in a thimble-sized flat in London, it’s hardly the happily-ever-after she was looking for.
Lil’s ready to do the baby-thing on her own – it can’t be that hard, right? But she should probably tell Max, if she can track him down. Surely he’s not that Max, the highly eligible, headline-grabbing son of Lord and Lady Rushbrooke, currently trekking up a mountain in South Asia? Oh, maybe he wasn’t ignoring Lil after all…
What I thought of the book
The book is about Lil Bailey, a school teacher at an exclusive private school who finds herself single again after being dumped by her boyfriend. She finally pulls out some courage to go on a date after eight years and finds herself on a first date with a handsome and eligible bachelor who also happens to be a mountaineer called Max Rushbrooke….What Happens Now? Well…imagine the worse as Max completely ignores her after their one night stand and she soon finds herself pregnant! The book then shares Lil’s journey of how she handles the situation and how she breaks the news of her wanting to be a single mum to her family, friends, her colleagues and eventually Max. I love how Sophia, the author details Lil’s every obstacle that comes her way including preparing for her little one.
I also enjoyed Sophia’s writing style which was engaging and relatable so much so that I found myself looking forward to reading every page of the book. The book was mostly entertaining and funny with very descriptive sex (which made me blush!) but at the same time I felt upset when Max ghosted her and that got me a little emotional. I found that reading the book, brought back a lot of fond memories of when I was pregnant with my kids and the experiences I had. The author injects a lot of details of how the rich and wealthy live in London which I found totally amusing.
Sophia has the gift of bringing the supporting characters to life with such crazy but likeable personalities! I loved Lil’s mum, step-dad, her friends Jess and Clem as well as Mike and Steph…who are just so supportive but a weird bunch at the same time. I found myself drawn to the book more as I got to learn about each one of them.
It is a great book to add to your summer reading list as it is totally enjoyable but I have to add that the book is a little bulky with over 350 pages measuring 25cm x 16 cm hence I did not bring it out with me as often as I normally would, that being said it was easy to read it as it had slightly larger prints.

About the author
Sophia Money-Coutts is a 30 plus-year-old journalist and author who spent five years studying the British aristocracy while working as Features Director at Tatler. Prior to that, she worked as a writer and an editor for The Evening Standard and The Daily Mail in London and The National in Abu Dhabi. She writes a column for The Sunday Telegraph called Modern Manners and often appears on radio and television channels talking about important topics such as Prince Harry’s wedding and the etiquette of the threesome. Her debut novel, The Plus One was released in 2017 and this is now followed by her second novel, What Happens Now?
