[Ad-gifted] If you like gadgets then you need to read our latest review on the BenQ LaptopBar Monitor Light – it’s a light that sits at the top of your laptop allowing you a bit of light to shine on your workspace or scrolling space.
You might find it a handy addition to your laptop bag if you travel a lot or are a student working mainly from a small space or library where light can be limited or where you don’t want to distract others. In this LaptopBar review, we will look at the specifications and some of the most appealing features of this tiny add-on gadget.
What I thought of the BenQ LaptopBar
The first thing I noticed when I opened it was how there was a little carry bag for the light, which instantly made me realise how handy it would be to take with you pretty much anywhere. It’s easy to piece together – which is good as found the limited instructions hard to follow – although visual I still wanted a bit of text so that I knew I was on the right path putting it together, that being said, I managed okay.
You attach the light with a sticker magnet that sits on the back on the computer/laptop screen. It did bother me that there were no replacement stickers, as although I would use the light regularly, I wouldn’t want to keep the magnet on the laptop all the time, so would want to be able to remove and reapply it – however, I would expect that most people would simply keep it in place – this would just be my personal preference. There is a second magnet which I thought was good as you could use one light across two laptops.
The light charges with USC wires, so you just need to get yourself a plug attachment for that as there isn’t one included. I have plenty around the house so this wasn’t an issue for us. You can also plug it into your computer whilst it’s charging and it will also charge like this. However, this is just as I see it as I couldn’t find how to charge it in the instructions, so perhaps go on the website, and contact the brand to be sure of the best ways to charge it.
I would never really have thought to have a laptop light prior to this review, but I can see the benefits. Especially if you want to work in the dark and just want enough light to clearly see your computer and keypad. I also liked how you could choose between tungsten lighting (so a soft honey glow) white light or blue light, depending on your personal preference. You can also extend the light with its little arm that allows you so sit the light above or at a slight distance from the screen – see photos for an example of this.
I like to watch films from the comfort of my bed and this light gives me a better viewpoint of the film. This gadget is great, and although we aren’t quite past Halloween, we are certainly creeping closer to Christmas, I would say this is likely to make a perfect gift – it even fits in a stocking!

This would be great for those late night study sessions. I don’t want to put a light on and bother anyone but I still need to get some work done. I like the magnetic attachment option.

While assembly was easy, I agree that having some text instructions alongside visuals would have been helpful.
