The Rug Bear by Emma Rattray
[Ad-gifted] We’re all bookworms in our house so when we were offered the chance to read and review Emma Rattray’s new book The Rug Bear, I had to say yes.
This beautifully illustrated story is a sweet tale of friendship and ensuring no one is left out – both great topics as our youngest, Margot aged 4, recently started school and playground squabbles are something that always worries me.
When Bear is playing hide and seek in the forest with his good friends, Lion and Fox he suddenly gets very tired indeed and, in the shadow of a tall tree, Bear falls into a very deep sleep.
A mouse, a hare, a squirrel and a ladybug all mistake Bear for a nice, cosy rug as his fur is so soft and furry. It’s so tempting and snuggly, they all settle down for a rest, but get quite a surprise when Bear wakes up!
Charmingly illustrated by Michael Terry The Rug Bear is full of gorgeous pictures and the fun story is perfect for young readers aged 0-5 years. The rhyming style definitely captured Margot’s imagination and there was plenty of opportunity for different voices with the host of sweet characters created by Emma Rattray.

What did we think of The Rug Bear by Emma Rattray?
This is a sweet and gentle tale full of familiar animals and features one of Margot’s favourite games – hide and seek. It’s fun enough to engage children, especially with the unexpected turn of events in the story, yet the gentle pace and rhyming style make it perfect for bedtimes.

About the author
Emma Rattray was born and brought up in rural Scotland and the west coast of Ireland. As a child she spent a lot of time climbing trees, swimming in rivers and playing with her white rabbits. When young, she and her sibblings had their own real car to drive around the fields in, a 1940’s Austin. They could not drive it properly but managed to bump, jerk and then stall around a nearby field. As a result, their car was called Hicccup.
Emma later became a journalist, starting out as a secretary in the London office of the Washington Post. After becoming a finalist in a Vogue writing competition, Tina Brown offered her a position as a Features Writer for Tatler. She now lives in Perthshire with her husband and children.
The Rug Bear is her first book.
