Happy 75th VE Day - Stay at Home Street Party

If you are not familiar with what VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) means, it is actually the day to mark the end of World War 2 which took place on 8 May 1945.  Winston Churchill, Britain’s Prime Minister at the time announced that it would be a holiday and everyone decided to have a street party to celebrate. This year marks the 75 Anniversary of this historic day and although Britain is still very much in #lockdown and everyone is recommended to #stayathome.  A lot of people including us are still going to celebrate it with a fabulous picnic themed Afternoon Tea Party at home.  Keep on reading to find out how you can join in the celebration too.

We have been doing lots of activities this week which I have added as part of my children’s home learning/homework activities.  We started the week by creating some fun and educational activities for the kids to do such as creating our own buntings, colouring the Union Jack as well as downloading the Free Quiz from Talking Tables, who co-incidentally also send us the VE Day Bundle for our feature in this post.  We also downloaded the children’s VE Day Resource Pack from Twinkl where both my kids watched the VE Day PowerPoint presentation, did some word search activity, learnt about the allies, learnt about wartime recipes and decoded some morse code sentences.

I also loved the fact that my Facebook feed this week has been filled with other parents also sharing their activities and ideas on what they are doing in preparation for the VE Day celebration.  Do remember that there is going to be lots of things happening all throughout Friday, do check out the above poster for details on what will be taking place if you plan to join in.  Here’ is a youtube VE Day Playlist which I listen with my children… they really enjoyed watching and listening to it especially Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by Andrew Sisters which you can watch below.

One thing for sure, both my children love baking and cooking just like me and one thing we have been doing more is spending a lot of time together discovering new flavours and recipes. I have to admit that we decided not to bake wartime cakes but decided to bake more modern items which we enjoy.  We started a few days before the party to bake some chocolate chip cookies, white chocolate and nut cookies, English Scones (I would have made drop scones but both mine have gone off raisins at the moment), Sausage Rolls, Tomato Tarts, Victoria Sponge Cupcakes as well as Cheese, Cucumber and Egg Sandwiches.   Although this seems like a lot of items to bake, especially since flour is hard to find, we made them in smaller quantities as there are only 4 of us at home. VE Day is an important Day so I wanted kids to know how special it is.

Thank you to Talking Tables for sending us the VE Day Bundle supplies which consisted of a Rainbow Bunting, Napkins, Paper Plates, Table Cover, Cupcake Set (Pack of 30 cupcake cases, 30 cake toppers) and Cakestand.  This costs £30, if you would like to get the same.  We have decided to do 2 VE Day celebration, an indoor Afternoon Tea Party and another one on our front garden at 6pm on Friday. So if you are celebrating VE Day, please feel free to tag us on social media or leave some comments here on how you will be celebrating it. I’m strangely very hungry after reading this! It all looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the Twinkl tip – that’s something I haven’t looked at yet with the boys.

I remember celebrating the 50th anniversary of VE day in school. This is a great way to share the celebration with family and teach them about the history of the day

The cakes look fabulous and it’s lovely that the kids got involved in the prep for the party . It’s so nice to see everyone making an effort during this lockdown.
