Two vitamin D tablets sit on the same shelf. Same dose on the front, same count in the tub, nearly the same price.

They are not the same product. The difference was decided in a factory, in a sequence of steps nobody prints on a label. A contract manufacturer such as Superior Supplement Manufacturing makes those choices to a brand’s specification. Granulation, compression and coating all happen before anyone designs the tub.
None of this is exotic. It is just invisible, and it explains most of what shoppers put down to luck.
Why Is a Tablet Not Just Pressed Powder?
Because loose powder will not hold together, and it will not flow.
A tablet press works at speed, filling identical cavities up to 10,000 times an hour. Powder that clumps or bridges produces tablets of uneven weight, which means uneven dose. Getting the material to behave is most of the job.
That is what granulation is for. Fine powder is turned into larger, free-flowing granules, usually by wetting and drying it, then milling it back to a consistent size. Only then is it blended and compressed.
The full sequence runs to 6 stages, and each one can be done well or badly:
- Granulation, turning powder into granules that flow.
- Drying, bringing moisture down to a target level, often under 3 percent.
- Milling, breaking the dried mass back to a uniform particle size.
- Blending, distributing the active evenly through the batch.
- Compression, pressing at a force that holds without over-hardening.
- Coating, where a coat is specified at all.
What Do the Other Ingredients Do?
They make the process possible, and most have nothing to do with the benefit on the front.
- Binders hold the compressed tablet together so it survives the bottle.
- Disintegrants do the opposite, breaking it apart once swallowed.
- Lubricants stop the mixture sticking to the press tooling.
- Flow agents keep the powder moving into the die evenly.
- Fillers bring a small active dose up to a tablet you can actually pick up.
A 25 microgram dose of vitamin D is a speck. Almost everything in that tablet is there to turn the speck into an object.
This is why an ingredients list looks alarming to people expecting one line. A long list is usually a sign of normal manufacturing rather than of anything being padded out.
Why Are Some Tablets Coated?
For four different reasons, and only one is cosmetic.

- Taste. Many actives are genuinely unpleasant, and a film coat solves it.
- Swallowing. A coated surface slides; an uncoated one does not.
- Stability. Coatings slow moisture and light reaching the contents.
- Timing. An enteric coat resists stomach acid so the tablet opens further along.
That last one changes behaviour rather than experience. It is used when something irritates the stomach or breaks down in acid, and it is the difference that most affects whether a dose arrives intact.
Does the Format Change How It Works?
It changes when, more than whether.
A standard tablet has to disintegrate before anything dissolves. A chewable skips the first step. An orally disintegrating tablet collapses on the tongue without water, and an effervescent one is already in solution before you drink it.
None of that alters the dose printed on the tub. It alters how quickly the dose becomes available, which matters for some actives and not at all for others. Anyone tracking their routine on a wearable health tracker will not see the difference, because it is not that kind of effect.
What a Label Can and Cannot Tell You
Here is the part most shoppers get wrong, and it is worth being precise.
Food supplements in the UK are regulated as food, not as medicines. That means the Food Standards Agency sets the rules they follow, covering safety, composition and what the packaging is allowed to claim.
Licensed medicines are a different system entirely, assessed for efficacy by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency before they are sold. A supplement has not been through that process, and its label cannot claim it has.
So the tub tells you what is in it. It does not tell you how well it was made, which granulation route was used, or whether the coating is doing a job. Those sit with the manufacturer.
What Separates Two Identical Labels?
Three things, none of which appear on the packaging.
The first is the raw material. The same named ingredient comes in several chemical forms, at different purities, from different suppliers, and the label rarely distinguishes them.
The second is testing. Responsible manufacturers check each batch for identity, strength and contamination, and keep the paperwork. That costs money per batch and shows up in the price rather than the claim.
The third is the tablet itself, which is where this article started. A well-formulated tablet disintegrates predictably. A badly formulated one can pass through largely intact, which is the origin of most stories about supplements doing nothing.
None of that is visible in a shop. What is visible is who made it, whether the brand names a manufacturing standard, and how specific the packaging is about form.
Reading the Form as Well as the Dose
Next time two tubs look identical, look at the form rather than the number. Coated or uncoated, chewable or standard, effervescent or not.
That will not tell you everything, but it tells you something the front panel does not, and it is free. Sensible habits in your thirties and beyond are built on that sort of small, repeatable attention.
