Here it is, the much-awaited review of the musical, Calendar Girls. We have been really excited and eager to watch the show for a while now and soon as it started… we were not disappointed at all!  It was a star-studded performance with a star-studded cast.  There were lots of TV actors and personalities which you will instantly recognise, including Denise Welch, Fern Britton, Sara Crowe, and Ruth Madoc (who you’ll know from Hi-De-Hi).  The first half of the show was a roller coaster of emotions and brought me from laughter to tears (you know what I mean if you’re familiar with the story). The two more prominent characters, Anna-Jane Casey and Rebecca Storm, both have great voices that really carry the singing aspects of the performances. I found that I immediate could recognise the songs as being written by Gary Barlow – they have his sense of style, rhythm and feeling along with the lyrics that have been well pieced together to tell the story.  The Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent is an incredibly beautiful theatre with comfy seats – which is more than I can say compared to other theatres which I have been to (I’m sure you’ll know if you’re a regular to the blog!).

If I had to sum my review up…I would say ….WOW…. what a performance – it had a steady start, and then whoosh you had an eyeful of their WI Calendar and my throat is still hurting from all that laughing.  I am glad that through all the comedy elements, they still managed to bring out the poignancy of what they were trying to portray. Although the theme and storyline about these everyday ladies is strong, I did wonder if it would be risky when made into a musical…but in the end, it worked out wonderfully well because of the comedy aspects.  Kudos to the whole cast who were completely amazing!  Each and every person was so crucial to the show and made such an impact on the stage, they did not need much props and the simple backdrop design depicting a Yorkshire countryside (if you can picture that on a stage!) was sufficient.   I would definitely recommend seeing this if you are a fan of the movie. The production was so good on the opening night that they even had a standing ovation when the show ended.  Calendar Girls show will continue until this Saturday at The Regent Theatre, so if you have not booked your tickets, maybe you will after reading our review of it!

About Calendar Girls

Calendar Girls the musical comedy by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth which received fantastic five-star reviews in London’s West End is now touring around the UK and will be heading our way to The Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent.  The award-winning production is inspired and based on the true story of a group of ladies, who decide to appear nude for a Women’s Institute calendar in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital, in memory of one of their husbands, and have to date raised almost £5million for Bloodwise. This musical comedy shows life in their Yorkshire village, how it happened, the effect on husbands, sons and daughters, and how a group of ordinary ladies achieved something extraordinary.

Cast and Crew

The new tour will star novelist and television presenter Fern Britton, returning to the stage for the first time in 30 years, as Marie, Lorraine Bruce (Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate and theatre credits include Piaf at The Donmar and Vernon God Little at the Young Vic) as Cora, Anna-Jane Casey (Billy Elliot on tour, Stepping Out in London’s West End, title role in Annie Get Your Gun at Sheffield Crucible) as Annie, Sara Crowe (West End roles include Bedroom Farce, The Real Inspector Hound & Black Comedy and Hay Fever) as Ruth, Ruth Madoc (Hi-De-Hi, Little Britain and Gypsy) as Jessie, Rebecca Storm (discovered by Willy Russell and cast as Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers, and her handprints are part of the Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre Walk of Fame) as Chris and Denise Welch (The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Coronation Street and Waterloo Road) as Celia.

Is it weird that I have never been to a musical?! The Calendar Girls sounds like a great one to go to!

You must at least go to one Cecilia, you are missing out of the glitz, glamour and comedy element of it all
