Reaseheath College Lambing and Zoo Weekends

[Ad-gifted] Springtime definitely feels like it’s just around the corner after today’s visit to Reaseheath College at the first of their two lambing weekends. The sunshine helped too!

The agricultural college – located in Nantwich, Cheshire – are hosting their annual Lambing Weekend on March 1st and 2nd, and March 8th and 9th. A ticket-only event, it offers families the chance to meet the adorable new arrivals and learn about life on a working farm.

I visited on the first day of this year’s two lambing weekends with my husband and our four-year-old daughter. Jemma adores animals, so an afternoon on a farm was the perfect way to spend a Saturday.

The event is open 10am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm. We arrived at about 12.30pm and were helpfully directed though the college grounds to an available parking space. There was plenty of free parking, so a great start to the visit.

Once we had shown our tickets, we were given wristbands which gave us access to both the farm and the mini zoo, and a programme packed full of interesting information about lambing, a map, and some colouring and activities for the kids.

We headed straight to the main attraction in the Lambing Shed to see the newborn lambs, which of course were adorable! And also went to see the expectant ewes.

There is also lots of other things to see and do on the farm, including checking out the cows and pigs, or some of the machinery used on the farm.

Before we stopped for a break, we headed straight over to the College’s Mini Zoo, just a short walk from the farm past the lake and through Reaseheath College’s beautiful grounds. The zoo is used by students at the college in term time, and because of this is only open to the public during school holidays and at weekends.

There was a little trail for the kids to take part in as they walked around the zoo, and the promise of a sticker on completion, always a fantastic incentive to any child! The mini zoo has lots to see with 200 species of animals, from the more unusual such as capybaras, endangered frogs, and porcupines to the more common such as goats, chickens and donkeys.

There are regular talks from one of the zoo keepers so that you can find out more about the zoo’s inhabitants, but we didn’t stay for one. From experience they tend to be wasted on our four-year-old, despite her interest in animals.

We rounded off our trip with a browse around the Farmers’ Market where we grabbed some snacks and a drink, plus the seemingly obligatory purchase (for us anyway) of an inflatable unicorn for our daughter! There are also a few interactive stalls where you can have a go at hands-on activities.

What Did We Think of Reaseheath College Lambing Weekend?

Firstly, I can’t believe this is our first visit to Reaseheath College’s Lambing Weekend, how have we not been before!? This will certainly be an annual outing for us from now on.

Jemma loved seeing the newborn lambs, nuzzled up to their mums in the hay. And she was fascinated by the expectant ewes, grouped together dependent on whether they are expecting a single lamb, twins or triplets.

There are lots of information signs dotted around the farm, and educational info in the programme, that helped us answer most of our inquisitive daughter’s questions on the nitty gritty of lambing!

You are not able to get too close to the ewes and lambs, for obvious reasons, but there is an opportunity to hold one of the older, bigger lambs and have your photo taken. There was quite a queue for this, but it went down quite quickly. I’d definitely recommend braving the wait for this, as it completely made Jemma’s day getting to have a lamb sit on her knee!

While you’re in the queue, there’s also the chance to have a go at birthing a lamb – well pulling a toy lamb out of a box through a hole! Jemma thought this was great fun and it kept her entertained.

The mini zoo was wonderful. In fact I would say the size of the zoo was perfect for our little one, who can get over tired and a little bored with all the walking needed of a larger zoo.

We spent a good two to three hours looking around the farm and mini zoo, so the event is well-worth the ticket fee.

There’s a picnic area if you want to bring your own refreshments. We opted to buy a couple of very tasty milkshakes, and also a kid’s lunchbox (that was excellent value) from a stall near to the mini zoo.

The whole visit has left us ready for spring, and more sunshine please!

My goodness those little lambs bring back fun childhood memories of growing up on a sheep farm. I bet my grandkids (and myself) would have a fun time there.

Sounds like a lovely event to see the lambs so tiny, but also learn more about it. I need to see if there’s anywhere near here that does anything similar x

Animals are always fun for kids and even adults to see. We’ve been to places that is similar to that when my son was little.
