The Mad Hatters Tea Party
Wondering what to do with the family this Easter holiday? Why not head to Churnet Valley Railway located in Staffordshire to participate in the Mad Hatters Tea Party! We received an Easter invitation to partake in Easter-themed fun activities such as the Churnet Bunnies Easter Egg Hunt followed by taking a ride on the specially decorated trains which will be running along through the scenic countryside.
Much-loved characters Alice, the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit will be strolling through the train to talk to all the children while parents and grandparents can relax with a warming hot drink and some treats. There will also be a selection of delicious cakes and a soft drink for children. But don’t get too comfortable as the Queen of Hearts is out on her Royal Train to inspect her subjects so behave or it will be “Off with your head”.
Children would be encouraged to admire the view and take part in the Humpty Dumpty Easter Egg Hunt with a complimentary activity sheet. Kids would need to keep an eye out through the window of the train to find the clues and solve the puzzles of where Humpty Dumpty has hidden the March Hare.
That’s not all! Balloon Artists will also be available to create the finest creations to fight the fiercest of foes while the court face painter who will be sure to make a fool out of you. Don’t forget to take the time and join their Arts and Crafts team at Froghall station.
When is the Mad Hatters Tea Party?
The Tea Party will be held on 15, 17, 20, 21 and 22 April 2019 at the following times : 11am, 11.45am, 12.30pm, 1.15pm, 2pm, 2.45pm and 3.30pm
How long will the train journey take?
The train journey will take about an hour. Passengers will only be allowed to leave the train from their originating station, where there will be activities to take part in before and after your booked journey.
How much does The Mad Hatters Tea Party cost?
The prices start from £7 for kids aged 2 and under, £13 for kids aged 3 to 15 and £19 for an adult
Where does the train depart from?
The trains departs from both Froghall and Cheddleton stations.

Some tips to read up on before you book your Churnet Valley Train tickets:
- You must pre-book your seats
- Although there will be lots happening during the train ride, bring along some toys for the kids to play with to keep them occupied, as little kids may get fidgety
- Bring along some snacks for the kids in case they are still hungry even after having the cakes onboard
- Get the kids to use the toilet at the Cheaddleton/Froghall train station before the train leaves
- If possible try to do a group booking, seated nearby, as the kids will have the opportunity to move around to play with other friends/relatives and not feel confined to just seating in their seat
- There will be ample free parking available at both stations so don’t worry about parking
About Churnet Valley Railway
The Churnet Valley Railway is a preserved standard gauge heritage railway to the east of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England, that operates along a part of the former North Staffordshire Railway’s (NSR) Churnet Valley Line. Regular services travel between the two main stations at Cheddleton (the base of operations and motive power) and Kingsley and Froghall (the commercial and Administrative base). There is an intermediate station at Consall. Some trains also head beyond Cheddleton to Leek Brook Junction (the limit of the Churnet Valley Railway’s track) and on to Ipstones, but Ipstones station is not in use. The railway is roughly 10 1⁄2 miles (16.9 km) long from Kingsley & Froghall station to Ipstones. The land from Leek Brook Junction to Ipstones is owned by Moorland & City Railways (MCR), a company aiming to run freight trains from the quarries at Cauldon to the national network at Stoke-on-Trent, and to re-introduce a commuter service between Leek and Stoke.
