Despite being the capital of the United States of America, Washington D.C probably isn’t the first location to come to mind when visiting as a tourist, despite housing some of the most iconic buildings and landmarks in the world. However it is a city packed full of sights to see and places to visit. Which one would you visit first?

First of all, you will need to find somewhere to stay. If you are wondering where to stay in Washington D.C., there are plenty of places in the different areas of the city – with each having something special to offer.

 

The White House

The official residence and workplace of the President of the USA, this building has been the residence of every US president since John Adams. It is probably the most famous building in Washington D.C. even with many other famous buildings in the same area.

You can tour the White House but tours are scheduled on a first come first served basis and you are encouraged to submit a request a tour as early as possible due to how popular the spaces are.

 

Lincoln Memorial

If you are thinking about visiting the White House, then you will want to check out the Lincoln Memorial. A marble monument of the 16th president, you will be in awe of its stature and size. It has always been a major tourist attraction so is definitely worth visiting.

 

The United States Capitol

If you wanted to keep to the political theme when being a tourist, this building is well worth checking out. The Capitol is the seat of the House of Representatives and the Senate. There are plenty of free tours of the building and these can be reserved online. You may even get the chance to visit the world’s largest library, the Library of Congress.

 

The National Air and Space Museum

If all things space interest you, then this museum is a must-see. It is one of the world’s most popular museums for a reason! It includes the original 1903 Wright Brothers Flyer and many other famous air and space vehicles that everyone would recognise. Plenty of the exhibits are interactive and will have you in awe.

 

National Museum of American History

If museums are your thing, this is another museum that is a must-visit if you are in Washington D.C. It contains important pieces of Americana which includes one of Edison’s light bulbs and even the actual ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz film! If Americana is something you are interested in, this museum has plenty to offer.

 

Washington National Cathedral

A breathtakingly beautiful building to look at, this Neo-Gothic cathedral took 83 years to build and is an absolute wonder to look at. The top of the tower is the highest point of the city and you can book tours in advance.
