Review: Edifier TWS1 Pro True Wireless Bluetooth Earphones*

The Edifier TWS1 Pro True Wireless Bluetooth Earphones for this review were from Tech4 and are available in black or white. The earphones arrived packaged in a sturdy ‘Edifier’ branded box, which also contained the sleek, minimal portable charging case, a USB charging cable and a small user manual.

Two additional sets of earphone coverings were also included, both differently shaped to the ones which were attached to the earphones, to offer comfortable wearing to a wide range of users. A USB mains electric plug was not provided, so the user would need to purchase one, or use one supplied with another item, to be able to fully utilise the earphones. As many other electrical items are now supplied with USB plugs, this seems like a good way to avoid unnecessary product duplication and waste – and it was also positive to note clear recycling instructions for the product and (mostly non-plastic) packaging.

What did I think of the earphones?

Before 2020, I mostly used my wired earphones for listening to music, TV on demand and audiobooks around the house if other people were listening to different media at the same time. However, since working from home for part of last year, I have become more used to additionally using earphones for online meetings, phone calls and an almost endless list of virtual events. I found wired earphones particularly restrictive if I needed to set up my technology to listen to something whilst also using other equipment – perhaps for listening to training & taking notes or listening to music whilst crafting etc. I hadn’t invested in wireless earphones before, as I had heard very mixed reviews about the sound quality, in-ear comfort and battery life of these products, so I was interested to try using the Edifier Wireless earphones.

I was initially concerned when the earphones arrived as the user manual was so small. I’m not too bad at setting up and using new technology, but couldn’t see how two short pages of instructions were going to be enough to get me started. I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I opened the charging case, a red light appeared on the case and it was clear from the manual that the earphones were charging at a low level from the enclosed battery. To fully charge the earphones, the charging case is plugged into mains electricity via the USB cable. One full charge takes only 40 minutes and provides 12 hour playback time from the earphones. The ‘low level’ battery charge gives 30 additional hours of power, resulting in 42 hours total of playback time – more than I think any user would ever need at one time. I haven’t used the earphones for 12 hours uninterrupted, but have tested them with one 40 minute charge followed by a full workday of 8 hours use and a video call with friends in the evening without any loss of power. The earphones fit securely into the charging case, which closes tightly and is clearly marked ‘L’ and ‘R’ to ensure the correct earphone is inserted into each charging slot. This is great as it means you can pop the case into any bag or pocket without concerns about it coming open or the earphones dislodging and either not charging or getting lost during transport.

As per the instructions, blue and red lights flashed quickly on the earphones as I removed them from the case for the first time. I simply accessed Bluetooth from my phone’s Settings menu; switched the technology on; searched for the earphones’ name as provided in the user manual and slower, blue flashing lights on the earphones showed that the two devices we paired and ready to use together. This process proved equally simple from my iPad. I initially tried out the earphones with some music and the sound quality was excellent – crisp, with good tone and well balanced between the two earpieces. The latter seems to be thanks to the mirroring technology used to ensure both earphones are connected to the device, rather than one ‘lead’ earpiece being connected to the device and relaying information to the second earpiece. The same technology meant that I could transfer between listening to media and answering phone calls without any loss of sound or change in quality. During phone calls, I also felt that background noise seemed to be filtered out and the caller and I could both hear each other very clearly regardless of our locations.

I was surprised by how easy it was to control the earphones once they were in my ears. Both have a touch button on the outer area. Media can be played or paused with one press on either button, which will also answer an incoming call; press and hold either button to decline or end a call; double click the left earbud to ‘decrease’ (either reducing the volume or going to previous items on a playlist) or the right earbud to ‘increase’ (turn volume up or move forward in a playlist). These controls seemed to suit the way I think about technology, but other users may want to get used to the volume controls whilst the earphones are not in place.

Having now used the wireless earphones regularly, I am extremely pleased with them. I’ve been able to video call with multiple friends and experience the same, excellent sound quality that I get when listening to music. The earphones have remained comfortable when used during exercise or for longer periods of work and conversation. Best of all, the volume control on the earphones is sensitive enough for my hearing – even with the device volume on its lowest setting, I have always found it uncomfortably loud to wear two earpieces to listen to my iPad – and responsive & effective across a range of devices. The highest compliment I can pay these Edifier TWS1 Pro True Wireless Bluetooth Earphones is that I wish I’d bought them much sooner as they’ve improved my use and experience of other technologies and my enjoyment of online events!

Note

To prevent possible hearing damage, always set the volume to an appropriate level and do not listen at high volume for long periods.

Do not expose the earphones to heat and please ask for staff advice before using near medical or industrial equipment or onboard aircraft.

When the earphones are no longer functional, please recycle at facilities that cater for electronic waste products, rather than disposing of the unit with normal household waste.
