We pride ourselves as book worms and are really proud that our kids are just like us and love reading books. We find reading is a great way for kids to spend their time instead of watching TV or playing on the tablet. We find it easier as well just to bring a book along with us when we travel to keep them entertained without worrying about battery power. Children’s book author, Alexis Hunter recently contacted us to feature her book called Clara’s Search for Magic which is aimed at kids aged 7 to 9-years-old. So hope you enjoy reading our review with loads of input from our kids as well.

- Overall the book is a nice addition to our collection and will be easily read again at bedtimes.
- We noticed a small typo error in the book on the second page – mostordinary has been written instead of most ordinary but otherwise the book is beautifully written and illustrated
-
In terms of it being age appropriate, it was perfect and easy to read which we think is important when you want to encourage your children to enjoy reading by themselves.
- Our girls’ only critique was that the story meant that these people weren’t truly magic. Having read the book ourselves,we realise that there is a deeper meaning to it ie there are truly magical people in the book but also people who posses magic in their hearts
- The vocabulary in the book is straight forward and easy to read, it didn’t pose much challenge for someone who is a good reader
- We loved that the book shares of the idea that if children dream enough they will achieve what ever they desire

The headmaster of the School of Magic tells Clara that she is too ordinary to perform magic. Clara must set off on an adventure to meet a host of magical characters and discover where their magic came from in order to find her own.

About the Author
Alexis Hunter is made of everyday magic. She was born in 1980 and lives in the North of England with her husband. By day she pretends to be a serious person and works in the legal profession and by night, she writes fantastical tales, bakes delicious cakes and sings out of tune.
About the Illustrator
The illustrator, Ira Baykovska is from Ukraine and has illustrated several books. Her illustration was bright and child like using the crayon colour pencils technique. In a time full of computer generated block colour its a nice contrast and also adds quite a bit of depth to the images.
How do I get a copy of the book and how much is it?
A copy of the book can be purchased via Amazon here for £5.99.

I love that the main character has red hair — when I was growing up the only character I saw who had the same hair colour as me was Ariel from Little Mermaid and Pippi Longstocking! sounds like a great read for kids
Yes the kids loved it Bryanna, it was such a fun read
This sounds like a great read and I love the idea of the message behind it
Yes super message behind the story Joanna

I love books with such a positive message like this. I think it’s a good read for the kids and I love how it looks! It’s definitely worth getting for kids who are just starting to discover their love for reading.

This book sounds fabulous and I love the fact you have included some information about the author. My boys are so into reading which is wonderful to see in young ones. It should always be fun to read 🙂
Thanks Lynne, we always try to as we ourselves are curious about book authors. Yes we agree.

I do love reading children’s books as most have teaching messages that we as adults seem to have forgotten as we’ve grown
Yes totally agree, we love to read the books to our kids too at times, so we get to know more about the book
It does sound like a lovely story and one that my little one would love. x

I love the look of the main character of this book, it makes her special and different from the other “blonde haired princesses” from children’s book.
Yes lots of people love her red hair and quirky character
Perfect timing, I was looking for a book to gift to my friends daughter – so this is a must purchase – she will love this x
Thanks Melanie, hope she enjoys the book as much as we did.
Sounds like a great book for young children although I think the typo would annoy me
True, but just a small error and I don’t think it bothered the kids much.

This book looks so cute! Can’t believe there’s a typo though!! Great illustrations though!
Love this book review. My daughter loves reading she loves nothing more than curling up beside me and reading i was the same at her age. My sons are more like their dad love factual things especially when it is about coding and computer stuff.
I am sure you feel great too whe you read to your kids, book in their own right are so magical
Yay a red hair main character!!
Sounds like a great book and pretty cheap at £5.99!!!
Kelly
Yup, we love the red hair too and the book price!
As an illustrator, I always love seeing children’s picture books that are still created in traditional media – especially colored pencil are quite rare!
Also, it sounds like the message is actually quite deep and multi-layered, with the concept of magic both as ‘real’ magic and internal power. Perfect as a basis for talking about empowerment and wishes with children, I imagine!
You’ve said it perfectly Evelyne, glad you enjoyed the post x
This looks like the type of book my nieces would adore, although a little younger than the guided age they love anything with magic in so I am sure would love to be read this at bedtime and I am positive they would love the illustrations! 💕
Yes magic is so wonderful and at that young age, they believe that magic exists
