From goblins tinkering in old ore mines to a changeling hare-woman, Devon Folk Tales for Children is a collection of tales from storyteller and artist Leonie Jane-Grey. Published by The History Press, the stories take readers on a wild and magical adventure through the ancient lands of Devon.

What we thought of the book
I have a great fondness for Devon, having grown up in the South West, and have long been fascinated by the myths and legends that relate to the county’s windswept wilds of Dartmoor and Exmoor. So, combined with my interest in folklore and children’s fiction, this book was a must-read.
Devon Folk Tales for Children is skilfully written, with each tale transporting you back in time to an era when superstition had a powerful influence on people’s lives. As I read, I suspended all logic to imagine what it felt like to fear and respect magical creatures.
I was particularly enchanted by the tale of ‘Old Grandmother Silver, Hare Witch’, a story that made me wonder whether there’s more to our older generations than meets the eye.
Other characters that feature include tulip pixies, fairies, goblins and imps, and Leonie’s rich descriptions are matched by her stunning illustrations, my favourite being of the character ‘Cutty Dyer’.
This collection is perfect for children and adults, too, especially those who are curious about myths and magic. It’s perfect to be read as part of a storytelling session, ideally outdoors in a forest or by a campfire.
