Our next book review example features author L.B. Anne and her book The Girl Who Looked Beyond the Stars, which is the first book in the Sheena Meyer series.
Sheena Meyer is the girl who brings an extra lunch to school each day just in case someone doesn’t have lunch. She’s also the girl who questions and investigates everything, driving her parents and teachers nuts. She spends most days waiting for some grand event to happen and change her life, but she won’t have to wait much longer. The Murk is coming for her because of a gift she doesn’t know she has.
Nine years ago an angel appeared in front of select kids all over the world. In Michigan, it appeared in a willow tree in front of a four-year-old little girl. She’s the only child who saw it, the one with the gift. Sheena is now thirteen and has since forgotten what she saw. But things change when her father is in a terrible accident, and she witnesses a supernatural being save him.

An elderly man, a peculiar new kid at school, and mysterious text messages will change everything Sheena has ever believed in, sweeping her out of a humdrum, teenage, existence, and setting in motion what one little girl’s destiny can mean to the world.
What we thought of The Girl Who Looked Beyond The Stars : Book Review Example
I find that books that are apart of a series either work or they don’t. So I was unsure if I should get the whole set so decided to start with the first book in the series Sheena Meyer series to see what my teen daughter thought about it. Although she is an avid reader, she is getting into a stage where she is being picky about the books she reads so it took her a few days to even open the book. With a little encouragement, she started reading the book and soon I had to ask her to put the book away and get to bed as she was that engrossed reading the book.
Perfect for tween and teen read, the book talks about spirituality, being kind and showcases Sheena as a strong and fearless character which makes her a good role model for young readers. The book set makes a lovely gift set as well for teen readers.
What did my 14-year old daughter think of this book review example?
This book is an interesting read. I particularly liked the relationship between Sheena and the other characters in the book. The fact that she is so kind even to strangers is really inspiring.
The story follows Sheena who is having to deal with her father’s close brush to death when he is involved in a car crash but survives. It was a “miracle from heaven” as her mum said but Sheena saw something that the others did not. She saw a angel-like figure standing by her fathers bed. and hearing her mothers’ words, the cogs in her brain start to turn and of course, with her friends help she tries to figure out why she saw what she saw and goes on a mission to prove that what she saw did really happen.
I did not expect the book would be that good, as I found that I could not put the book down. Without giving too much spoilers, the book ends on a cliff hanger and in order to find out what happens next, you would need to buy the other books in the series as well.
I found the book gripping with a strong central character and I would definitely recommend this book to teen readers. I found Sheena’s character to be witty and with a unique voice which that I am sure teen readers would relate to, making it an engaging read. I also like how she deciphers her thoughts and navigates through the different situations she is put through in the book.
