We were excited to try MathLink Cubes Numberblocks by Learning Resources as we are for anything in a colourful box, but personally as a parent I really enjoy activities that double up as educational and something that I have to sit and do with the children. Sometimes life gets hectic and as a parent you are not as present as you wish to be, on top of juggling the children, housework and all the other joys a stay at home mum can entail.
I was looking forward to this as I knew they would recognise the Numberblocks from Cbeebies but did think my little ones were slightly too young for this but is was great for them to play with. We did open this with my nephew who is 6-years-old. I will be honest when I saw the stickers, I may have slightly huffed. However, this was actually great, Loki followed the leaflet building the characters and my job was obviously the stickers.
My little ones got involved too, luckily the bits weren’t small enough for me to panic when they got into Bea’s hands, and it was great to see Teddy counting them. I felt this was too young for Bea who is 1-years-old but it was perfect for Teddy who is two-years-old as we kept it simple just playing with the number blocks.
We built them, counted them, rearranged them, added them and counted some more so definitely a great fun educational time. Loki went on to use the activity cards, they relate to episodes to play along, and it was lovely to see his face when he successfully figured out the equation. Although I instantly thought my two were too young for this there never too young to learn and this doesn’t feel educational.
What We Liked
We loved these, the kids were so excited about them as they instantly recognised them from CBeebies. It’s simply fun just making the different shapes with them never mind the fact that’s its educational!
What We Didn’t Like
I would like for there to have been more stickers and tiles, so the pieces were fully decorated.
Overall
We loved it, although the mathematical side of it my pair were too young, they still thoroughly enjoyed it more from a building perspective. However, Teddy played wonderfully with them. We didn’t include the cards for him and just used the blocks for counting purposes and simple maths but using the blocks and putting them together for him to count. My nephew loved it and it was lovely to see him ponder over maths problems and see they joy when he worked them out. A real fab way to encourage learning without it feeling educational. Ideal for those who struggle with maths to encourage and help them with a fun element to it.
