eBook Review: Summer Kisses at Mermaid Point

Summer Kisses at Mermaids Point is written by Sarah Bennett, who is the best selling author of a number of romantic fiction trilogies such as Butterfly Cove and Lavendar Bay. The book is published by Boldwood and is the perfect lighthearted read that will get you in the mood for those long summer days ahead.

The book is set in Mermaids Point, a close-knit coastal community where nothing escapes the attention of the local residents. Its name derives from the mystical mermaids of the sea who are said to bring luck to the idyllic haven.

The main protagonist, Laurie (Loralei) Morgan, fills her days baking and running her café. Laurie’s whole world revolves around the family she adores and the community she lives and breaths for. Her father and mother run the shop attached to her café and her brother, Nick, operates sightseeing tours to the small uninhabited islands off the coast of Mermaids Point. When we join the characters, Fortune’s Wheel seems to have dealt Mermaids Point a gloomy hand as tourism has dried up and the inhabitants are having to enter the new world of social media to diversify and stay afloat. That is until a questionable photograph of what appears to be a mermaid off the point appears on social media and tourists come flocking, hoping for a glimpse of the beautiful creature and bringing with them hope of better things to come.

However, tourists are not the only people drawn to the area hoping for a chance sighting. Jake Smith, an investigative reporter, is sent for some rest and recuperation after working for months on a harrowing story. While he’s there, his brief is to do some digging on the mermaid sighting and see if his investigative nose can snag a sensational cover story for his determined editor, Mac. Jake and Laurie are immediately drawn to each other. However, life is never straightforward though, is it? Although this can often make things interesting, Jake’s nose for a story threatens to dash the relationship on the rocks before it ever fully starts.

What I thought of the Book

This eBook is the perfect escapist novel to kick back and enjoy when you want a distraction from everything around you. If you long to be by the coast, as I do, then you will love (if not feel a little jealous!) of the setting for the events in Summer Kisses at Mermaids Point. The narrative focuses on the two main characters Laurie and Jake as their worlds collide. While Laurie’s family couldn’t be any warmer or more loving, Jake is battling with some serious demons from the scars left by an abusive father and a mother who was dominated and so not able to show Jake the love he craved.

Jake sets up camp in a cottage at Mermaids Point for the summer under the guise of researching the mysteries around mermaids for a book he is writing. As he and Laurie inevitably begin to get closer (and it isn’t just her amazing cherry chocolate brownies that attract Jake), his deception and her own insecurities, which stem from a previous heart-breaking experience, seem set to dash any connection they have.

When you add into the mix, Laurie’s brother, Nick, who is somewhat of an enigma himself, it seems that they are destined to tread different paths. If you like a good romance with a hint of magic, and cake (when it’s chocolate cake, I’m not really sure what more you could want!), then you’ll love this book and probably want to live in Mermaids Point as I did by the time I finished reading it! The characters are real, funny and all have their foibles, but you are drawn to them and their relationships like you are to the community they live in. If you’d like to know if the mermaids really do look out for Mermaids Point and bring it luck and good fortune, you’ll have to dive in and read for yourself! It’s a feel-good read that you won’t regret investing some time in.

About the Author

Sarah Bennett has been reading for as long as she can remember. Raised in a family of bookworms, her love affair with books of all genres has culminated in the ultimate Happy Ever After – getting to write her own stories to share with others.

Born and raised in a military family, she is happily married to her own Officer (who is sometimes even A Gentleman). Home is wherever he lays his hat, and life has taught them both that the best family is the one you create from friends as well as relatives.

When not reading or writing, Sarah is a devotee of afternoon naps and sailing the high seas, but only on vessels large enough to accommodate a casino and a choice of restaurants.

Sarah is also the author of the Butterfly Cove, Lavender Bay and Bluebell Castle trilogies.
