Family Day Out: Pumpkin Picking at The Little (Creepy) Cow Shed

It is the start of half-term holiday for us and as a tradition, one of the things we usually do during the October half-term is to decorate our home with Halloween decorations and go pumpkin picking.

So to start off our week, we decided to head to The Little (Creepy) Cow Shed in Cheshire to check out their homegrown pumpkins which came in all shapes, colours and sizes covering an area of almost three acres as well as their Halloween experience.

We visited the place in the day  and had a couple of hours of good fun in the farm with plenty of sweet treats, hot food and other activities going on but they also do The Twilight Zone and Freaky Fridays for older teens or if you prefer to experience pumpkin picking at night, enjoy spine-tingling live music and magic shows.

What did we think about it?

Getting pre-teen/teenage kids to go pumpkin picking can seem a bit daunting especially if they feel they are too old for activities such as this. But for me personally, I find that it has become our family tradition to welcome the Autumn season when we carve the pumpkins, go trick or treating and we are then ready for the Christmas season starts.

So with it being a fantastic day yesterday, I decided last minute to still keep the magic by bringing the our kids and their friends to The Little Cow Shed, as we had not been there but heard a lot about it from friends who have.

We booked the tickets online, so entry into the farm was hassle free, parking was also well organised with plenty of overflow spaces on the fields. I am guessing that this would get muddy on a wet day (so wear your wellies) but we went on a nice and dry day.

The £3 per person entry ticket gave us access to their pumpkin patch, spooky marquee with licensed bar, play zone, spooky treats area, face painting and parking was free. The place was huge, with lots of hot food, ice-cream/waffle trailers, cakes and brownies from Layers Treats as well as flavoured milk/hot drinks vending machine.

So you could easily spend 1 to 2 hours there on a nice day especially if you plan to take part in the Pumpkin Floristry Class or get your dog to join the Creepy Dog Show. There is also a magic show taking place on a couple of the Saturdays in October at 6pm at the Spooky Marque as well as a fire show on Friday nights.

A day out such as this would easily cost a family of four, no less than £50 for the entry fee, some hot food/drinks and a couple of pumpkins but the memories created are priceless. We have been to many pumpkin farms over the years and to be honest the pumpkins in this farm, have been one of the nicest and most varied in size, colour and shape.

Also note that the pumpkins have been grown at The Creepy Little Cow Shed from seed hence you are supporting a local farmer.  The fields at The Creepy Little Cow Shed is breath-taking as you’ll see the pumpkins of many colours nestled in the field and half the fun is deciding which one is the best and finding the hidden special pumpkin for a prize . There are also wheelbarrows available so kids can have lots of fun with it as they pick the pumpkins.

You could also make it a family day out with a stroll down Breaton Heath’s Nature Reserve afterwards. Just remember to dress appropriately and wear your wellies if it is a wet day.

There are lots of photo opportunities and if you are heading there as a family without a tripod, don’t worry, everyone was  obliging and offering to taking photos.

Finally, if you are asking why you should pay so much more for a pumpkin as you could get cheaper ones in the local superstore for just £2 or less, or why you need to go pumpkin picking.  Just remember that it is memories you are creating for your family and supporting a local farm at the end of the day which is what days out as a family is all about. Children grow up so quickly and you want them to cherish their childhood as long as you can.

How much does it cost to get into The Little Cow Shed? 

Entry £3 per person (under 1s go for Free). Entry £5 per person for Twilight Saturdays. Entry £10 per person for Fright Night Fridays.

Pumpkins cost extra with baby pumpkin priced at £2, 8″ small pumpkin at £4, 12″ medium pumpkin at £7, 16″ large pumpkin at £10 and the 16″ extra large pumpkin at £20 each. They also have lots of different coloured (special) pumpkins/gourds, these costs a little extra compared to the normal pumpkins.

Where is The Little Cow Shed?

If you are not familiar, it is opposite the Breaton Heath’s Nature Reserve with ample of overflow car parking space on the field.

What are their visiting hours?

The Little Cow Shed is open all year around but their Halloween events are only open on Fri, Sat and Sun throughout October as well as the whole half term week ending 3 November 2024. We visited the place in the day, but they also host the Twilight Zone in the evenings and Freaky Friday events at night.
