Upon entering, visitors are greeted by dazzling canopies of fairy lights, dancing Borealis-style lasers, and a soundtrack that syncs perfectly with the light features, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.

The paths, lined with autumn leaves, crunch beneath your feet as you move through tunnels of light and fog, making the experience feel even more magical and seasonal.

What sets the Magical Woodland apart from other light trails are the interactive elements and characters scattered throughout the route. It’s truly like nothing we’ve experienced before and it was a standout experience!
It’s all Halloween-themed but designed to be fun and spooky rather than frightening, making it ideal for families. From a Hocus Pocus-inspired witch encounter to friendly pirates, dinosaurs, and even a quirky mad scientist, the live action character performances are engaging and delightfully whimsical.

These performers interact with guests of all ages, making you feel like part of the show rather than just a spectator. It’s this combination of lights, sound, and live performance that creates a fully immersive experience unlike anything else we’ve seen or experienced at similar events.

Despite its spooky theme, the Magical Woodland is carefully curated to be family-friendly. Characters like Wednesday Addams and the pirates adventure, bring a sense of fun mischief to the experience, while appearances from friendly dinosaurs and ghostbusters themes, add an element of adventure that kids particularly enjoy. Each section of the trail brings something new, ensuring there’s always something to capture your attention and keep you immersed in the moment. The fact that you can loop the trail as many times as you want is a bonus, allowing visitors to return to their favourite spots or take in areas they may have missed.

What Did We Think of the Magical Wonderland?

From start to finish, our experience at the Magical Woodland was nothing short of magical. We attended with our four children, aged between 2 and 12, and were a little concerned about how well the event would cater to such a wide age range. However, the diversity of experiences, performances, and visual displays kept all of us entertained and engaged throughout. Our youngest, who is often a bit wary of spooky encounters, was initially apprehensive about the zombie and Beetlejuice interactions. However, the characters, while quirky, weren’t too intense, and after the initial hesitation, he started to enjoy himself, especially as the lights and sounds captured his attention.

The pirate interaction show was particularly memorable. The actors were incredibly skilled at tailoring their performances to suit both children and adults, blending humour and Halloween fun in a way that never felt forced. Our older kids were drawn into the storylines, while the little one was enchanted by the spectacle. The live owl exhibit was another highlight. It was such a unique touch to have a real owl that the children could hold and take pictures with. This interaction added another layer of wonder and allowed for a bit of calm amidst the energy of the event. There was a small fee to hold the owl and take pictures if you wished.

After wandering through the trails and interacting with characters, we warmed up with pizzas and toasted marshmallows at the end. The food was delicious, especially after spending the evening in the cool autumn air. There were plenty of food options available, and despite the large crowd, the event was well-organized with ample opportunities to sit and enjoy the surroundings. If we hadn’t had a tired toddler, we would have happily gone around the trail again!

Compared to other light trails we’ve been to, The Magical Woodland truly stands out. The combination of high-tech lighting, immersive soundscapes, and live performances made it feel like much more than just a Halloween event—it was a full sensory experience. The attention to detail, from the characters’ interactions to the perfectly timed light and sound effects, created a cohesive and engaging atmosphere that kept both children and adults captivated from start to finish.

The event runs from the 1st to the 31st of October, with off-peak and peak hours depending on the day of the week and time of visit. • Parking – For those driving to the event, there is a large car park close to the entrance, and parking is available for £3, which can be purchased when booking tickets.
• Access and information – The Magical Woodland makes efforts to accommodate all visitors, with accessible paths suitable for prams and wheelchairs, though some areas are steeper or muddier depending on weather conditions and it is recommended to take wheelchairs and pushchairs at the risk of experiencing some steeper hills and muddy terrain. We brought a camping trailer for our youngest and, although there were a few tricky hills, we managed to navigate the trail without too much difficulty.
• Family-friendly – Families with young children will appreciate that the event is specifically marketed as family-friendly, with a focus on fun rather than scares. The Halloween theme adds a spooky element, but it’s never overwhelming, making it enjoyable for children of all ages.
• Time – If you plan to visit, be aware that you will be allocated a 1½ hour timeslot from your entry time, so it’s important to arrive on time to make the most of your visit.
• Dogs – Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed at the event due to safety concerns around the lights, loudspeakers, and high-energy environment. The combination of electricity cables and curious pets could pose risks, so it’s best to leave furry companions at home unless they are assistant dogs. Again warnings are issued to those with photosensitivity or neurological disorders to avoid due to variations of light effects used throughout the experiences.
