Style 4 Ever Diamond Art Lamp Set from Canal Toys

The beautiful and sparkly unicorn on the front of the Style 4 Ever Diamond Art Lamp Set from Canal Toys was enough to make my daughter very excited to get cracking on creating this lamp!

The box contains a battery-powered LED base, seven bags of diamante in various colours, a special pen and square of wax to help you pick up the diamante, a small plate to hold the sparkly gems while you work, and two acrylic characters to choose from – a unicorn and a butterfly.

In addition, you need three AAA batteries to power the lamp (not included).

The set is aimed at kids aged six plus, and when I first opened the box I was a little worried it might be too intricate for my four-year-old daughter, despite her being an experienced crafter. But I need not have worried, while I was still reading the instructions, she had worked it out and was busily sticking the diamante onto the character.

What we thought of the Style 4 Ever Diamond Art Lamp Set

Jemma chose to decorate the unicorn, though we will revisit the set and make the butterfly too. There are more than 1,300 colourful diamonds, perfect if your child is as much as a magpie as mine!

Once you remove the film from the character you can feel that the acrylic is sticky, so it’s just a case of simply applying the diamante to the unicorn. I did have to prompt Jemma not to place her hands on the unicorn, but to hold it at the edges instead (otherwise the glue can get a bit grubby), but she soon got the hang of it.

The design on the unicorn has little coloured and numbered circles so that you know where each of the gems needs to be placed. Jemma loved the diamond painting technique and seeing the brightly coloured unicorn take shape.

The pen is really easy to use and the wax, which Jemma would now and again add to the bottom of the pen, helped her to pick up the diamante. There is a special plate that you can shake the gems onto and by giving this little ridged container a gentle shake it helps to turn the diamante over to the right side.

A couple of tips, firstly only shake a few of the gems onto the plate at a time, both are quite light so easy to knock over. At least if there are only a few diamantes on the plate at any one time it’s no big deal to tidy them up. Trust me on that one and learn by our initial mistake!

Secondly, don’t forget to keep the plastic film that you removed from the character. I accidentally threw this away at first, in my desire to tidy up as I went along! But I had to retrieve it as the film is useful to pop back on when you want to take a break from the activity.

I was impressed with how many hours of fun there are with this set, and we have only completed the first of the two characters. The activity does take focus and concentration, so once Jemma was getting a little tired we would pop the film back on it and come back to it another day. I think we completed the unicorn in about three sittings, with me helping a little bit too. Though to be honest, I found it very therapeutic!

Once completed, you simply insert your finished design into the LED base. By pressing the button on the base you can choose from various brightly coloured modes, including one that alternates through all of the colour options – which was Jemma’s favourite.

There’s no option to set a timer on the lamp, just a simple on or off. Jemma has placed it on her desk and likes to have it on while she’s colouring of crafting.

When I asked Jemma for her verdict of the Style 4 Ever Diamond Art Lamp Set, she said she loved how sparkly and colourful the unicorn is.
