What I thought of the book
My daughter has read both Gillian’s earlier books Poppy Loves Devon and Poppy on Safari and loved it. This is the third book under the Crazy Cream Adventure Series and how wonderful that Poppy and Devon‘s adventure continues!
Gillian is such a talented writer! She has the gift to captivate her readers as well as showcase her love for her dogs so beautifully into her books. Although aimed at children from the ages of eight to twelve years of age, this book is perfect for teen readers or even adults who love animals.
I love the beautiful illustrations found dotted around the book, and the font style did not make me feel like the book was too wordy. The inclusion of historical facts intertwined in the dog story was a smart move to gets kids more engaged in history.
What my 13-year old daughter thought of the book?
I thought that the book The Legends of Childer’s Forest was an entertaining book to read. I found the book interesting as unlike other books, this book shares what actually goes on in a dog’s mind and also incorporates historical event and people such as King Charles II, The Battle with Oliver Cromwell and the New Army.
I was glued to the book as I enjoyed how the situation in the story kept deteriorating but then it just magically gets better, like it had a magical solution.
In my opinion you could get away with just reading this book on its own but it would be better if you read the previous two books to get a better understanding of the storyline and the characters in the book.
The book follows Poppy and Devon who are are minding their own business when a family of rabbits gets driven out from their home in ‘Wildflower Field’. Drawn to help the rabbits, Poppy and Devon do everything they can to find the bunnies a new home.
I love how both Poppy and Devon persevere to find solutions and don’t give up hope when faced with numerous challenges. This is such a good book to read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves adventures or animals.

Gillian Young was born and raised in Worcestershire, UK. She’s loved reading and writing stories since a very young age. One of her earliest memories was writing plays for her parents and Aunt and Uncle which she’d then perform with her friends who lived in the same cul-de-sac. Following Art College, Gillian worked as a Graphic Artist. When her children were born, she worked in local schools before finally working for a large construction company where she was very happy for nearly 10 years. During this time, she also completed a creative writing course.
Gillian continues working towards finding a ‘new normal.’ After being seriously ill, she’s realised that physically and emotionally it’ll take time to recover and adjust. She believes that, if possible, it’s better to turn a negative into a positive and even though there are things she can no longer do, the one thing that hasn’t changed is her passion for writing. Looking back, she wonders if this was a huge nudge from up above, telling her to get moving with her undying passion…writing stories; especially children’s stories.
Now, enter Poppy and Devon. These two golden retrievers have brought much love and laughter into Gillian and her family’s lives. This sounds like a really great read for young readers. I like that there are a few illustrations dotted in there, too. I always loved that when I was a kid.
