I have an 8-year-old daughter, Margot, who loves drawing and loves animals – especially cute furry friends, so this delightful and engaging book by National Geographic Kids was a perfect pick for my little artist.
We can often be found following along to YouTube video drawing tutorials but occasionally, even despite pausing, they can be a bit tricky to follow. So using a book that contains so many drawing guides and going at our own pace – and with no adverts or technology to contend with – was a real win!
What we thought of How to Draw Cute Animals Drawings by National Geographic Kids
Published by Harper Collins, the 48-page paperback is filled with vibrant animal illustrations featuring step-by-step guidance which is broken down into simple shapes. The follow along steps were really easy to translate to paper, especially with the guidance lines which helped provide even more clarity.
There are 34 different animals you can have a go at drawing yourself including wild animals, birds, exotic creatures and furry friends from the arctic. The book also includes colourful photos and fun facts about the real-life animals, adding an educational touch to the book making it both fun and interesting. Did you know cats can make up to 100 different types of noise? I didn’t. But thanks to this book, my random knowledge of domesticated and wild animals has leveled up!
Each illustration comes to life in just eight easy to follow steps, but one thing that would make the book even better would be to expand on the steps and offer an additional guide on how to do shading or how to colour animal markings realistically.
Overall, How to Draw Cute Animals is a fantastic book for kids aged 6 and up who will find the steps easy enough to follow along. It’s also great for anyone who is interested in drawing or learning more about animals.

All my kids love to draw and love cute animals so a book like this would be great for them. That is such a great idea. My eldest is cute animal obsessed so would love to be able to draw hamsters especially. My son would love the facts.
