eBook Review: Sherlock Holmes and the Ripper of Whitechapel

Join M.K.Wiseman in her well-researched and smoothly written narrative on the infamous Whitechapel murders: Sherlock Holmes and the Ripper of Whitechapel published by Megan Wiseman. Not only does the author recreate the horror felt as a result of the murders and the sheer terror that they instilled into the community, she also writes the tale from the perspective of the great pipe-smoking, Stradivarius playing, Opium addicted genius that is Sherlock Holmes. Emma Smith, Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly were the victims who horrifyingly fell foul to the terrible actions of the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. Wiseman cleverly blends history with fiction as our pipe-smoking detective battles against the incompetences of the police force to bring the monster to justice. However, Sherlock faces a personal dilemma of his own whilst trying to piece together the clues (those that are left after the police force seem to try their best to get rid of them all through their incompetence). Where his faithful side-kick and partner, Dr Watson would usually recount his exploits for the world to enjoy, he is glaringly absent from the famous detective’s side. As much as Holmes loves his friend, he cannot continue to ignore the clues stacking up against him. The detective finds himself at crossed purposes and aligns with Dr Watson’s fearful wife, Mary, to prevent his friend falling foul of the law.

What I thought of the eBook

As a huge fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I was unsure that this eBook would do justice to our wonder-detective, especially in the way that he becomes embroiled in a case where, historically, there was blunder after blunder in trying to catch the person responsible for such heinous crimes. However, as soon as I picked up my kindle, I didn’t want to put it down. The research into the characters and their mannerisms really shines through in the narrative and I became hooked on whether or not Holmes would solve the murders and whether or not his friendship with Watson would be destroyed forever. In seeing the story through Holmes’ eyes, the reader is given a different insight into the character of Watson and we see more of his life and his own battles. As the gruesome plot progresses, you see detail from history intertwined with some fictional details quite seamlessly by Wiseman. The plot re-ignited my interest in the details of the Whitechapel murders while providing the satisfaction that Holmes was able to (in this fictional tale) apply his brilliance to a case that puzzled, and continues to do so, the country for years. You also see the frustrations of the police force, particularly Lestrade and his desperation to prevent any further atrocities. I would highly recommend Sherlock Holmes and the Whitechapel Murders for anyone who has a love of murder mystery that draws on genuine historical events. The tale is tastefully and respectfully re-told. It’s just a travesty that Holmes wasn’t around to catch the killer at the time.

About the author

M.K. Wiseman has degrees in animation/video and library science – both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today, her office is a clutter of storyboards and half-catalogued collections of too, too many books. (But, really, is there such a thing as too many books?) When she’s not mucking about with stories, she’s off playing brač or lying in a hammock in the backyard of her Wisconsin home that she shares with her endlessly patient husband.

Sounds like a worthwhile read. I’ve not got into ebooks yet, something about paper that appeals, but the book title sounds good.
